Overview

The Student Central Professional, reporting to the Manager of Student Central, provides comprehensive, holistic advice and support across the entire student lifecycle once a student has applied to Lakehead University.

This role requires a high level of expertise and in-depth knowledge to accurately make complex decisions and guide students through complex policies, procedures, and regulations within three critical functional areas: Registration Services, Student Awards and Financial Aid and Undergraduate Admissions.

Responsibilities
  • Immediate, proactive and reactive independent diagnostic support, decision-making and problem resolution on a broad range of functions including, but not limited to, academic advising/eligibility, financial aid advising/eligibility, course registration/enrolment support.
  • Respond to inquiries providing detailed information that extends beyond the student's initial question/concern using a holistic, proactive and student-centered approach;
  • Provide comprehensive policy/procedure/guideline/regulation interpretation, application and decision-making;
  • Advise new and existing students regarding academic programs; scholarships, awards, and bursaries available and their corresponding application processes;
  • Manage OSAP reviews and academic progress, make changes to OSAP applications for students; assist students facing significant financial situations, and make decisions regarding eligibility for relevant reviews and/or emergency funding.
  • Counsel and advise students on academic and financial support appeal processes, reviews, and restrictions in relation to OSAP;
  • Troubleshoot, resolve and advise students on issues related to government funded financial assistance; serve as a Financial Aid Officer within the institution for OSAP purposes.
  • Assist Undergraduate Admissions with preliminary admission assessments related to program admissibility.
  • Manage sensitive situations and resolve complaints at an early stage in order to minimize conflict and prevent escalation;
  • Investigate complex cases and request further information from students to determine the precise nature of the problem and provide a resolution when able;
  • Liaise with external agencies (OSAP, NSLSC, etc.) on behalf of the student for various reasons including troubleshooting, assessments, information, etc.;
  • Maintain administrative documents and confidential student records for integrity, accuracy, consistency, decision-making and future reference.
  • Develop and deliver presentations/webinars/sessions to students on various topics related to the areas in which Student Central supports students
  • Participate in various student-related events to bring awareness to Student Central and make connections with students.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of experience in a student service advisory role with the demonstrated ability to respond to student needs with a holistic approach;
  • A strong preference for candidates with experience working in the field of Registrarial/Student Record Services, Student Awards and Financial Aid and/or Admissions within a post-secondary institution.
  • A strong preference for candidates with demonstrated knowledge of Ellucian Colleague as it pertains to Admissions, Registration/Registrarial Services and Student Awards and Financial Aid;
  • Experience in reading and interpreting academic transcripts and making/understanding student budgets; considered an asset
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and make independent decisions;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and advanced problem-solving capabilities with the ability to quickly adapt, shift and change between complex student situations;
  • Time management skills with the ability to multitask and be highly organized.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as well- developed presentation skills;
  • Fluency in French would be considered an asset.
