About the DepartmentFacilities - Maintenance includes all trade and grounds positions that work in school and administrative sites.

Purpose
- The Fire Alarm / Life Safety Electrician is responsible for conducting annual inspections and testing of fire alarm and life safety systems in accordance with the current CAN/ULC-S536 Standard for Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems. The role ensures deficiencies are identified and addressed, either through direct repair or coordination with others, to maintain safe and compliant environments for students and staff.
This position is accountable for:
- Maintain a balance between quality and quantity of work while meeting deadlines and adapting to shifting priorities.
- Prioritize tasks and collaborate effectively to solve problems.
- Demonstrate strong communication and teamwork skills to maintain positive working relationships.
- Follow all relevant safety standards, policies, and procedures to ensure the safety of self and others.
- Perform annual inspections and testing of fire alarm/life safety systems per CAN/ULC-S536, in coordination with the Mandatory Maintenance Supervisor.
- Identify system deficiencies and complete repairs or coordinate repair work as needed.
- Provide input for future Infrastructure Maintenance and Renewal (IMR) projects involving fire/life safety upgrades.
- Inspect new fire alarm/life safety installations and recommend improvements or modifications.
- Assist other electricians with emergency responses, maintenance requests, and daily work assignments.
- Respond to emergency after-hours maintenance calls.
- May be required to provide own, suitable vehicle for work
- Required to provide hand tools in accordance with current collective agreement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Journeyman Electrician certification is required.
- Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA) certification is a strong asset.
- Minimum five years' experience in fire alarm system inspection and testing, including report creation and editing.
- Experience with fire alarm panel programming is a significant asset.
- Familiarity with current fire/life safety standards and building codes is essential.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Operator's License and clean driver's abstract required.
