Primary Purpose: The Centre of Forensic Behavioural Science and Justice Studies (CFBSJS) is pleased to invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow for a 12-month term.
Nature of Work: A Postdoctoral Fellow in the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science and Justice Studies will contribute to a range of research projects in the areas of crime, justice, and corrections. The Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science and Justice Studies at the University of Saskatchewan is an interdisciplinary centre created to promote research, education and community engagement in the areas of crime, justice and corrections. Demands have, and continue to emerge at local, provincial and national levels for scholarly activity pertaining to the criminal justice system, including research and evaluation on emerging models of crime prevention and community safety, the law and justice systems, and correctional populations, programs and practices.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to lead a program of research encompassing one or more of the previously mentioned areas. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in national funding competitions.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities: The successful applicant will be responsible for different aspects of research projects in the areas of crime, justice, and corrections including drafting research proposals and ethics applications, conducting literature reviews, organizing project advisory team meetings, collecting data and conducting data analyses, drafting manuscripts and technical reports, and delivering conference presentations. In addition, the successful applicant will be responsible for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students conducting research projects.
Qualifications
Education: Ph.D. from a recognized Canadian or International University in a field of study relevant to the fields of forensic behavioural science and justice (e.g., Psychology, Psychiatry, Sociology, Public Health, Criminal Justice, Nursing, Law, etc.). To be hired as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Saskatchewan, researchers must be within 5 years of the date at which they received their PhD.
Experience: The Centre collaborates with a number of criminal justice organizations including the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). Preference may be given to candidates whose area(s) of interest is aligned with one or more of CSC's corporate priorities:
- Safe transition to and management of offenders in the community
- Safety and security of staff and offenders in institutions and in the community
- Enhanced capacity to provide effective interventions for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit offenders
- Improved capacity to address mental health needs of offenders
Skills:
- Academic writing skills, including experience writing technical reports and drafting manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication
- Experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods
- Strong oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Experience with statistical software (e.g., SPSS)
- Previous experience drafting research grants is an asset
