How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Assistant Arborist Technician performs field work in arboriculture, forest management, forest health, hazard maintenance and monitoring, invasive species management and assists with implementation of restoration and resource management projects and programs. The position includes working as part of a team member in tree inventory, assessment, evaluation, pruning, removal, chipping, and extermination of pests and invasive species for the restoration and resource management business unit and capital projects.
Major Responsibilities:
• Provides active, operational support in the following programs:
o Forestry – stand tending, forest inventory and data collection, hazard tree assessment, monitoring and removal, forest pest monitoring and mitigation / control, and access and firebreak maintenance projects
• Invasive Species Management - patch management, inventory and data collection, monitoring, removal, and support for treating and controlling invasives utilizing a range of hand tools and equipment. Operates equipment including but not limited to:
o Tractors with planter or PTO driven chipper or winch, chippers, chainsaws, gas powered pole saws, UTVs, up to AZ trucks with float or trailer and a radial boom attachment, and the full spectrum of related climbing, roping, rigging, felling and herbicide / pesticide application gear
o Performs circle check on assigned vehicles and equipment, report any issues, and lock out / tag out if required
• Participates in daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning
What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)
• Completion of college diploma in Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, or a related field
• Valid Chainsaw Training Certification
• Valid Ontario Class G2 driver's license
Experience
• 1+ years of related experience in arboricultural services
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies
• Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and apply forestry management plans, drawings, details and specifications
• Understanding of arboriculture tree climbing skills and aerial rescue techniques
• Understanding and application of basic mathematical functions (e.g., adding, subtracting, measuring, money computation)
• Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy
• Able to self-manage workload and prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating workload and multiple deadlines
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and legislation
