Who we are

The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sands deposits.

Who you are

Mikisew Awasis Kisiwatsowin Society is seeking a Family Support Worker to provide culturally grounded, family-centered services to support the safety and well-being of children, youth, and families of Mikisew Cree First Nation in Fort Chipewyan, AB. This role will assist families in addressing barriers, strengthening parenting skills, and developing natural support networks to promote family wellness and prevent the need for out-of-home care.

This position is based in Edmonton, AB.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Support parents in building practical life skills, parenting strategies, and access to community resources.
  • Accompany clients to appointments, advocate on their behalf, and assist with referrals.
  • Promote culturally appropriate approaches to family healing, including engagement with Elders, land-based activities, and traditional teachings.
  • Encourage and facilitate family participation in cultural and community events.
  • Work collaboratively with community partners and other service providers.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all client interactions, progress notes, and reports in accordance with agency standards and confidentiality requirements.
  • Participate in case conferences, family meetings, and team debriefings.
  • Provide support and education to families to prevent crisis situations and promote healthy family functioning.
  • Assist with community outreach and early intervention programming that strengthens family resilience.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow ethical and legal standards.

  • Interaction with clients, including children, parents, social workers, healthcare providers, and other community agencies.

  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the agencies objectives.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Post secondary education or certifications in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Indigenous Studies, or a related human services field is preferred.
  • Experience in working with Indigenous children, youth, and families.
  • A combination of training and lived experience may be considered.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient in documentation and case management systems.
  • Understanding of Indigenous culture, community values, and historical impacts of colonization, including the child welfare system's legacy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other office management software.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language would be an asset.

Requirements:

  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector.
  • Child Intervention Record Check.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver's license with a Satisfactory 5-year Drivers Abstract.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required.
  • Willingness and ability to work after hours and/or weekends when required.
  • Willingness to submit to an oath of confidentiality.
