Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

The Intern, Mechanical Engineering carries out a range of activities under the guidance of more senior colleagues to support the analysis of information, the specification of the methods, process steps, and the plant, machinery and equipment required to design and continuously improve manufacturing or materials processes and process systems.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you'll do

  • Carries out a range of activities under the guidance of more senior colleagues to support the analysis of information, the specification of the methods, process steps, and the plant, machinery and equipment required to design and continuously improve manufacturing or materials processes and process systems.
  • Contributes to the development of and implement feasibility testing of proposed engineering solutions to provide feedback and data to validate the design.
  • Supports the drafting of engineering standards and specifications and the evaluation of the effectiveness of those standards.
  • Carries out inspections under the supervision of senior colleagues to evaluate the quality of engineering works and / or the integrity of existing installations or structures and makes recommendations to senior colleagues on the remedial works needed to ensure conformance with specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Delivers required outcomes by coordinating with suppliers and supply chain to receive, approve and integrate technical and commercial information to support detail design and supply chain and adhere to the overall schedule.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned. 

What you'll bring

  • Enrollment in a Mechanical Engineering degree program. 
  • Analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as a key part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
  • Technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
  • Knowledge of MRP, purchasing and management systems is preferred.
  • Understanding of ShipConstructor and ACAD software, document control systems and databases.
  • Ability to work effectively across a multi-disciplined team.
  • Critical thinker with the ability to analyze change requests, projects, and designs to anticipate schedule or budget risk.
  • Ability to work independently to develop solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and able to follow all safety laws and all the employer's safety policies and rules.
    Proficient computer skills.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
