Taan Forest Limited Partnership (Taan), a subsidiary of Haida Enterprises Corporation (HaiCo) an Indigenous-owned company wholly owned by the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) is seeking a highly motivated individual like yourself to be part of its Stewardship Team on Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off the British Columbia Northwest Coast. This is a Full-Time, Permanent Position with opportunities to expand and grow with the company, including mentorship, continuing education and advancement.
POSITION SUMMARY The Taan Area Silviculturist is responsible for the day-to-day workloads of Taan's Silviculture Crews and Forestry Assistants. They will ensure the organization of the work and the adherence to policies, procedures and safety protocols. They will work with the Planning Department to monitor harvest areas for the protection of cultural and forest features, develop plans and supervise habitat restoration projects, complete reports for CHN and provincial tracking, and compliance with regulatory requirements. They will assist with Silviculture planning and ensure completion of plans within budget and deadlines
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Oversight and responsibility for day-to-day activities of the Silviculture Crews and Forestry Assistants, including time tracking, organization of work duties, ensuring project completion in a timely and efficient manner in compliance with all safety standards
Tracking of harvest areas from planning to free growing, including preparation of site plans, completion of post-harvest assessments, monitoring of cultural and wildlife features protected within the development area of each harvest area
Writing and completion of all reports, Haida Gwaii Land Use Order obligation tracking, and meeting all of Taan's Corporate Management System (CMS) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) requirements. Assist with planning for Silviculture activities, ensuring the completeness of activities, meeting budget goals and project deadlines
Proven leadership, supervisory and team building skills
Knowledge of the regulatory framework, understanding of Forestry Regulations, including the Haida Gwaii Land Use Objectives Order
Excellent planning, writing, communication and organizational skills
Efficient, co-operative team player
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A member in good standing with the Association of BC Forest Professionals as a Registered Forest Technician with at least 10+ years experience in forestry or a related field
Experience with Silviculture tracking databases, Survey Wizard/Snap, Plant Wizard and knowledge of EBM
At least a Class 5 Driver's Licence
