Casual Wood Engineering Technician

Based in the Wood Innovation Research Laboratory in downtown Prince George, the primary responsibility of the casual lab technician will be providing support to faculty and students for research and course projects. This position reports to the Chair of the School of Engineering, with functional supervision from the School of Engineering Laboratory Lead and working closely with the faculty and other technicians.

ResponsibilitiesSpecific duties will include but are not limited to:
- Operating and maintaining a wide range of carpentry tools, milling devices and structural testing equipment such as hydraulic actuators;
- Producing pieces or samples of work as needed for instruction purposes;
- Working with faculty and students to prepare and carry out a range of experiments and projects, including the set-up of steel frames;
- General upkeep of the lab and equipment;
- Maintaining records and producing reports as requested (i.e., inventory, supplies, safety inspections, incident reports, etc);
- Carrying out regular safety checks and general audits of equipment and supplies;
- Other duties as may reasonably be requested.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
- Carpentry/wood working training/ experience;
- A minimum of three to five years of relevant work experience. This may include the construction industry, preferably with timber connection;
- A good understanding of basic construction principles, with an aptitude for innovation and design;
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc);
- The ability to adapt and contribute to a dynamic environment;
- Strong communication skills, with a collaborative approach and ability to adjust communication methods for various situations and people; and
- Experience and a license to operate lifting equipment is considered a strong asset.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
SalaryThis position has been classified at a Grade 9, $38.58/hr. The casual hourly rate of pay shall be at Step 1 for the Grade when filling a position that has been rated by the Job Evaluation Committee.
As part of our Casual Pool, employees are available on an on-call basis, and may be called in to assist during peak periods, vacation, or sick leave coverage. Normal hours of work are between 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday with possible consideration of a variance in consultation with the Chair and/or Laboratory Lead.
