Conservation Programs Specialist – Wetland Management

Position Details: Existing Full-time, Permanent position
Salary Range: $54,300 - $67,900 based on a 35-hour work week. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the successful applicant's education and/or experience as it relates to the position.
Location: Williams Lake, BC or surrounding area - Remote

What You Will Do
Working with DUC BC's energetic small team of biologists and engineering staff, you will help the team manage habitat, small dams, and water controls at DUC wetlands in the BC Cariboo-Chilcotin region.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Conduct inspections, operations, and maintenance of water control structures and dams.
- Build and maintain positive relationships and work closely with private landowners, First Nations, agricultural producers, and other project partners.
- Direct seasonal staff and contractors to complete tasks.
- Manage project data through various internal tracking systems.
- Maintain field equipment, operate small engines and be able to physically lift 50lbs of equipment.
- Conduct a combination of office and field work.
- Assist biologists with waterfowl surveys, bio inspections and biodiversity monitoring.
- Use GPS technologies and ability to navigate on backroads to access remote wetland projects using satellite communications devices (Garmin InReach) to ensure safety during field work.
- Effectively communicate between co-workers.
Who You Are
An enthusiastic team player and effective communicator with the ability to build positive working relationships with fellow DUC staff, municipal and provincial government staff, project landowners, and other conservation agencies.
Possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Self-motivated, detail oriented, enjoy a complex, changing environment and can manage numerous projects within tight deadlines.
Have a college diploma in a related discipline such as Agriculture, Environment, Natural Resources; equivalent practical field experience will also be considered.
A minimum of 3 years' experience and knowledge of infrastructure maintenance, water management, fleet management, habitat stewardship, and/or landowner outreach make you the ideal candidate for the position.
Requirements
- A valid class 5 BC driver's license
- Experience operating various equipment such as: ATV/UTV, chainsaws, brush saws, satellite devices pumps, and hand tools; or willingness to learn
- Comfortable driving a truck and trailer or willingness to learn
- Comfortable working alone in remote locations periodically
- An understanding of local agricultural, industry, First Nation or conservation practices
- Demonstrate experience working and communicating with a wide variety of partners such as landowners, First Nations and public service agencies
- Experience using computers with MS Office software
- Solid interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work long/flexible hours, in remote locations, in a variety of weather conditions, with some overnight travel
Assets
- Experience managing contracts and contractors
- Experience supervising and coaching others
- Experience with field navigation and/or data collection apps
- Experience and related knowledge in the local natural resource sectors
- Experience with heavy equipment supervision & materials procurement
- Awareness of BC Occupational Health and Safety practices.
- Understanding of the BC Water Sustainability Act & Dam Safety Regulation, and best management practices.
