What will you do?

Siemens Digital Industries is seeking a motivated Application Engineer for Automation to join our Sales Acceleration team. As a valued member of the Sales Acceleration Team, the Application Engineer – Automation plays a pivotal role in driving automation sales success. Working closely with the field sales organization, you will accelerate the adoption of Siemens factory automation, industrial control and automation solutions by being assigned to high priority customers and providing both hands-on and remote technical support throughout the sales lifecycle.

An Application Engineer – Automation brings expertise in designing complex automation architectures involving multiple products and technologies, with specialized experience in factory automation and industrial control systems. This role blends deep technical knowledge with customer-facing collaboration, offering a dynamic and rewarding career path at the intersection of engineering and sales. The position will support customers nationally with a focus on central and western Canada.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Technical Expertise & Customer Support:

  • Acts as the technical expert for factory automation, industrial control and instrumentation solutions for the Canadian market
  • Focus on Factory Automation and Measurement Intelligence Solutions with customer facing and regional focus
  • Understand end customer requirements and develop proof of concept System architecture and Recommended Parts list for end customers
  • Provides technical product advice for the development and implementation of complex or unique customer solutions
  • Serves as an escalation point for resolving complex technical challenges, providing on-site support when necessary to ensure customer satisfaction and system reliability
  • Prepares and presents detailed technical proposals, including product demonstrations and solution prototypes
  • Assists customers with commissioning machines, debugging complex automation and control systems and machine processes, testing and tuning technology functions, and optimizing machine performance
  • Working closely with Siemens Sales Organization, exclusive Industrial Distributors and Siemens Solution Partners, to demonstrate technical features and benefits of Siemens Automation portfolio
  • Must be able to size the Factory Automation applications based on application requirements
  • Ability to understand and influence customers and system integrators on the utilization of SIMATIC products
  • Understanding the value added and service offerings while partnering with customers to further understand their needs in order to provide them with a consultative technical solution
  • Develop Sales Collateral such as value proposition demo programs
  • Application Notes/White papers for Sales Organization
  • Coordinating closely with the Product Marketing team on various Marketing activities such as Product launch Seminars, Application Presentations and Workshops
  • Coordinates with team members to develop and implement effective technical knowledge transfer to customers, Siemens, and channel personnel
  • Provides technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams by sharing expertise, guiding solution development, and fostering a culture of continuous learning
  • Facilitates technical communication across departments to ensure seamless integration of solutions, accelerate project timelines, and enhance overall customer experience
  • Technically represent and interface with Siemens HQ and Competence Centre on complex customer projects
  • Stay well informed on industry changes while participating in professional organizations, where possible
  • Continuous learning with growing technologies by engaging with marketing segments, application notes, FAQs to improve technical skills and knowledge
  • Implements a yearly learning and development plan focusing on technical skills and engineering soft skills
  • Drives the adoption and integration of advanced factory automation technologies to enhance customer competitiveness, accelerate time-to-market, and support Siemens' growth objectives in the Canadian automation market

What will you need to succeed?

  • Bachelor's/Master's or Diploma of Engineering/Science in electrical/computer/mechanical engineering or computer science
  • Must have a proven record of 3+ years of Industry experience on Factory Automation Products
  • Strong knowledge of Industrial applications involving Factory Automation Products
  • Hands-on experience in Industrial Automation Platforms, Industrial networks, Factory Automation and Instrumentation
  • PLC Programming and/or Computer Programming Language experience (i.e. LAD, Structured Text, STL, C++, Javascript, Visual Basic, etc)
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills along with proven ability to provide technical training in French and English (bi-lingual)
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Must be willing to travel nationally on short notice
  • Application experience in industries such as OEMs or System Integration
  • Experience with:

  • Controllers (PLCs)

  • Industrial Networks
  • Factory / Process Automation
  • Machine Safety
  • Proof of concept development
  • Working experience with Siemens Automation products, SIMATIC PLCs and industrial automation platforms will be an added advantage

  • Measurement Intelligence (MI) knowledge is a plus
