Nature and Scope
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Athletics and Recreation, the Manager, Athletic Operations – Facilities and Fitness provides leadership for the daily operation, maintenance, and staffing of ARC facilities to ensure an optimal, safe, and engaging experience for all users. The position oversees facility staff, fitness programming, and scheduling of multiple athletic spaces, including two fitness studios. This role is accountable for operational efficiency, budget management, staff performance, and compliance with ORFA, WHMIS, AODA, OH&S, and other safety standards. The Manager implements preventative maintenance programs, supports capital and improvement projects, and ensures facilities consistently meet accessibility, safety, and service standards. Collaborating with Athletics, Varsity, Recreation, and College departments, the Manager ensures seamless service delivery, facility readiness for events and rentals, and contributes to operational strategies that enhance effectiveness, user satisfaction, and long-term sustainability.
Job Duties
Operations & Facility Management
- Oversee the daily operation, maintenance, and safety of ARC facilities, ensuring full compliance with ORFA, WHMIS, AODA, and OH&S standards.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs for equipment, fitness areas, and facility infrastructure.
- Conduct regular facility inspections, coordinate necessary repairs, and liaise with Algonquin College Facilities and external contractors.
- Ensure all operational systems (EZ Facility, MiGym, Facility Connect, access control, and payment systems) are functioning effectively.
- Serve as the primary contact for facility concerns, safety incidents, and maintenance issues, ensuring prompt resolution.
Fitness Programming & Member Experience
- Provide strategic oversight of fitness programming, group classes, and workshops to promote a healthy, active lifestyle for students and members.
- Support Fitness and Wellness Coaches in delivering innovative, inclusive programs and events.
- Monitor participation, gather feedback, and adjust programming to improve engagement and outcomes.
- Ensure all spaces are prepared and maintained to deliver safe, high-quality fitness experiences.
People Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and evaluate facility and fitness staff, including full-time, part-time, and student employees.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and ongoing training to maintain high operational standards.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, safety, accountability, and customer service excellence.
- Ensure all staff are competent in operational procedures, cash handling, emergency response, and member interaction standards.
Financial & Administrative Oversight
- Manage the facility operations budget, ensuring alignment with strategic and departmental objectives.
- Monitor expenditures, payroll, supplies, and maintenance costs; identify opportunities for operational efficiencies.
- Ensure accurate daily deposits, financial reconciliation, and inventory control.
- Prepare regular operational and financial reports for the Senior Manager, Athletics and Recreation.
Event & Stakeholder Coordination
- Collaborate with Athletics, Recreation, and Events teams to ensure facility readiness for varsity competitions, intramurals, and special events.
- Coordinate logistics, staffing, and scheduling for internal and external facility rentals.
- Serve as a liaison with college departments, vendors, and community partners to support operational and event needs.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Maintain and enforce emergency preparedness, safety, and risk management procedures for all ARC facilities.
- Ensure ongoing staff training in first aid, CPR, accessibility, and safety protocols.
- Regularly review compliance processes to align with industry and legislative standards.
Technology & Systems Management
- Oversee the performance and integration of facility management systems and software platforms.
- Coordinate with IT and vendors to troubleshoot issues, implement upgrades, and optimize user experience.
- Evaluate technology use for efficiency improvements and future planning.

Desired Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion, Recreation/Facilities Management, Sports Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in recreation, facility, or health and fitness management, including supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of occupational health & safety, accessibility standards (AODA), and risk management best practices.
- Proficiency with facility management and scheduling software (EZ Facility, MiGym, POS systems).
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and conflict resolution skills.
- First Aid & CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Valid driver's license required.
Compensation
- This position is classified as Level 3 on our Out of Scope Salary Grid, with a salary range of $79,297.31 – $89,249.82
