Job Description: Clinical Nurse
Position Summary
The Clinical Nurse is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of resident care, quality of life, and clinical compliance within the retirement residence. This role oversees the nursing department, develops individualized care plans, ensures adherence to regulatory requirements, and fosters a compassionate, resident-centered environment. The Nurse Supervisor provides leadership, supervision, and mentorship to nursing staff while coordinating effectively with residents, families, physicians, and external partners.
Resident Care & Family Relations
- Complete initial assessments, re-assessments, and re-admission assessments; develop and update care plans to reflect current resident needs.
- Establish and monitor individualized care plans to ensure quality standards are consistently met.
- Meet with residents and families/POAs to discuss care needs, address concerns, and ensure satisfaction with care delivery.
- Communicate regularly with POAs, discharge planners, and social workers regarding hospital admissions, discharge planning, and changes in care requirements.
- Provide emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to residents, families, and caregivers.
- Work as a Floor Nurse when required including administering medications.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Lead and maintain audits for the Falls Program, IPAC, and other clinical and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure monthly and routine audits are completed and investigate and follow up on any medication errors.
- Ensure staff receive all required training, including Medication Administration certification.
- Liaise with Public Health, Home and Community Care, IPAC, and RHRA during outbreaks and compliance-related matters.
- Responsible for maintaining up-to-date record keeping for all required compliance.
- Remain up to date with College of Nurses regulations, retirement home legislation, and employment standards.
- Ensure compliance with infection-control protocols, safe medication practices, and resident safety standards.
Administration & Operations
- Manage and support Nurses, providing guidance and supervision as needed.
- Always maintain a positive, calm, and empathetic approach when communicating with residents, families, and staff.
- Collaborate with pharmacy partners to support resident care and staff vaccination programs and ensure safe and efficient medication supply and handling.
- Ensure nursing supplies are adequately maintained by monitoring usage and anticipating future needs.
- Convene and participate in team meetings to support effective operations and communication.
- Maintain professional documentation, reporting, and resident charting standards across the department.
Accountability & Leadership
- Mentor, coach, and supervise nursing staff, providing guidance and performance feedback.
- Protect residents and staff by ensuring adherence to safety, infection-control, and medication protocols.
- Remain available by phone and/or on call for emergencies.
· Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Up-to-date Vulnerable Police Background Check (working with Seniors)
- Valid CPR & First Aid Certificate
- Previous experience in an Assisted Living Retirement home is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with Elders and their families.
- A caring attitude and commitment to providing high-quality services.
