POSITION SUMMARY/JOB DESCRIPTION:

As a Shelter Outreach Worker, you will work directly with individuals and families needing advocacy and support in areas such as domestic violence, housing, legal issues, employment, child safety, and healing. You will provide outreach services, referrals, and supportive counselling, while building strong connections with local service providers and community networks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide outreach and advocacy services to clients referred from both on and off reserve
  • Assist clients with safety planning, custody issues, and accessing housing, legal, and employment resources
  • Offer supportive counseling to individuals and families facing crisis or transition
  • Liaise with shelter staff, school districts, and other external agencies to support client needs
  • Prepare intake assessments, maintain accurate records, and participate in case reviews
  • Facilitate skill development and parenting support as needed
  • Identify and refer clients to appropriate community services and resources
  • Promote positive self-image and empowerment within families and the broader community
  • Assist with transportation for clients attending appointments when necessary
  • Track and report monthly outreach statistics in a timely manner

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post-secondary education in social work, child and youth care, counselling, or related discipline
  • 2–4 years of experience in a community-based social service setting
  • Strong interpersonal and advocacy skills, with the ability to support clients facing trauma and systemic barriers
  • Solid understanding of family systems, conflict resolution, and trauma-informed care
  • Strong organizational and computer skills, including documentation and reporting
  • Valid driver's license
  • Willingness to undergo a satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector), Child Abuse Registry Check, and Prior Contact Check

ASSETS

  • Experience providing assessment and intervention counselling
  • Knowledge of Indigenous communities and culturally relevant service approaches
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team
