Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to shape the future of transportation in Alberta? As a Bridge Engineer, you'll play a key role in building and maintaining the structures that keep communities connected—from river crossings and underpasses to complex interchanges and railway bridges. This is your opportunity to apply your engineering expertise to meaningful, high-impact projects that support the safety, functionality, and sustainability of our province's highway network.

Reporting to the Bridge Manager, you will lead and support the planning, design, construction, and rehabilitation of bridge infrastructure across the region. Your work will ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and on schedule—meeting technical standards while balancing environmental and stakeholder needs. From consultant management and technical reviews to on-site construction monitoring, your adaptability, problem-solving skills, and collaborative approach will be essential in achieving successful project outcomes.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the planning, design, and delivery of bridge construction and rehabilitation projects from inception to completion.
  • Reviewing consultant submissions, including bridge designs, tender documents, and inspection reports, to ensure compliance with standards and value for money.
  • Managing consultant engagement—drafting Terms of Reference, evaluating proposals, and providing technical oversight throughout project delivery.
  • Monitoring construction progress, participating in site inspections, and ensuring safety, environmental, and quality standards are met.
  • Liaising with internal teams, local municipalities, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to ensure open communication and alignment throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contributing to the development and revision of departmental standards, manuals, and specifications through technical committees and working groups.
  • Resolving technical and project challenges through informed decision-making and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Maintaining accurate records, schedules, and reporting systems for project tracking and transparency.

This position requires regular travel throughout Alberta—typically between 25-50% of the work schedule. It offers a varied work environment that includes both field and office-based activities, ideal for individuals who enjoy a flexible and hands-on approach to their work.
