Duration: Up to One (1) year
The Substance Use Service (SUS) (Addiction Medicine program) offers a holistic, trauma-informed approach to the assessment and support of people who use alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methamphetamines, cannabis or other substances. Patients range in age, social and income backgrounds and often present with concurrent mental health challenges. The team, comprised of physicians, a nurse practitioner, addiction service workers, peer support worker, psychiatrist and part-time social worker, supports a spectrum of person-centered goals including harm reduction and abstinence.
Summary of duties, but not limited to:
Comprehensive care planning, patient assessment and short-term psychotherapy, including:
Patient Assessment:
- Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments
- Formulate assessment findings and determine the suitability for appropriate resources
- Consult with team members and participate in team discussion regarding assessment and treatment, when required.
Care Planning:
- Develop an intervention plan in collaboration with patients, families, significant others and the interdisciplinary team, based on identified needs.
- Document intervention plan according to specific hospital and professional standards.
Interventions:
- Provide individual psychotherapy using recognized modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)-informed approaches, Motivational Interviewing, Structured Relapse Prevention, and Psychodynamic approaches
- Deliver short-term, goal-focused psychotherapy tailored to clients' needs, with attention to relapse prevention, emotional regulation, and coping skills development
- Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive frameworks throughout treatment.
- Facilitate groups (e.g. early recovery, skills-based groups, Seeking Safety)
- Consult and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members, as required.
Team and Program Development:
- Participate in program development, student education and research as required in a fully affiliated academic setting within the University of Toronto. Participate in personal professional development
- Contribute to the development of group therapy programming and psychoeducational materials for the Substance Use Service

Qualifications
- Master's degree in Social Work required
- Current registration with the College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers required
- Minimum 5 years clinical mental health experience, preferably in a hospital setting
- Demonstrated experience with a variety of psychotherapies including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, crisis intervention, and group therapy.
- Experience in the treatment of mental health issues related to substance use is an asset
- Comfortable facilitating both psycho-educational and process groups is preferred.
- Ability to work independently and manage complex and high-acuity patients
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent time management skills
- Proficient with Electronic Medical Record (EPIC PSS EMR), Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and navigation of the Internet
- Exceptional written/verbal communication skills
- Proven attendance and punctuality.
- Professional behaviour and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women's College Hospital
- This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all
