Purpose

Reporting to the General Foreperson, the Open Pit Supervisor is responsible to ensure the safe and efficient operation of their crew's daily open pit mining activities.  The position supports planning coordination with the safety, environmental, training, technical services, milling and maintenance teams

Responsibilities

Safety Compliance 

  • Promotes a safe and healthy work site environment for all employees 
  • Prepares and conducts crew safety and pre-start meetings 
  • Prepares and issues to employees, the 5 Point Safety Cards 
  • Has high visibility in the workplace using face-to-face interactions with employees to review risk assessments as well as any employee concerns 
  • Supports safety innovation and Unsafe Condition programs, incident reporting and accident investigations. Ensures timely follow-up and implementation of corrective measures 
  • Promotes the IRS and safety programs as well as ensures the follow up on safety issues arising from inspections, audits and outstanding actions 
  • Ensures that workers and contractors working in their area of responsibility are properly trained and inducted 
  • Ensures that a high standard of housekeeping in maintained in all areas 

 

Operations 

  • Assigns and communicates job tasks to employees, ensuring they have proper knowledge, tools, and skills to do their job  
  • Follows daily and weekly plans to execute on KPI's and identifies reasons for variances 
  • Works with trainers to ensure employees are trained and coached in accordance with operational requirements and to the CBA, to be as effective as possible in their jobs 
  • Manages personnel according to company policies and the CBA, providing them with regular feedback on expectations, achievements, and areas for improvement 
  • Work with dispatcher to maximize production efficiencies and best use of the Minestar dispatch system  
  • Supports the Drill and Blast Supervisor with related activities on nightshifts as required 
  • Participates in continuous improvement activities and initiatives for the Open Pit 

Training and Education

  • Grade 12 Minimum or equivalent, diploma in Mine Engineering, Mine Technician or equivalent experience is preferred 
  • Minimum 4-5 years open pit mining experience 
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory or technical services experience 
  • Valid "G" driver's license
  • Strong communication and leadership skills 
  • Good working knowledge of open pit equipment and procedures 
  • Able to read engineering plans and have a good understanding of ground control 
  • Good computer skills (Microsoft office)
