About the Role:

The News Production Specialist plays a key role in the seamless execution of newscasts, including flagship broadcasts, major event coverage, and breaking news across multiple platforms.

Reporting to the Senior Supervisor, Automated Control Room Director, this role drives innovation in newsroom and control room technology, providing strategic direction for broadcast delivery.

The News Production Specialist ensures content is effectively delivered across all platforms including server-based playback, podcasts, digital streams, and emerging formats. 

These positions will require working regular weekends in addition to occasional weekday shifts including mornings and late nights and are classified as a Group 4 position under the current collective agreement.

The following is an outline of some but not all the primary functions and responsibilities for this position:

Broadcast Direction and Multi-Platform Delivery: 


• Directing and overseeing the delivery of live and recorded broadcasts using MOSART and associated systems


• Ensuring technical execution and flawless delivery across all formats and platforms (live broadcast, server playout, streaming, podcasts, and digital products)


• Create real-time backup plans to safeguard delivery of content on multiple platforms


• Assisting in the operation of the MOSART automated control room application


• Checking MOSART rundowns for air, making changes in production fonts, and MOSART commands in the Open Media platform as required


• Performing technical initialization and facilities checks for camera robotics, video switchers, audio consoles, character generators, teleprompters, and related equipment.


• Managing technical elements for News productions.

Innovation and Systems Oversight: 


• Support integration of changing newsroom and control room technologies.


• Collaborating with senior management on continuous workflow improvement.


• Driving transitions to next-generation production technologies. 


Feed and Server operations: 


• Managing feed routing and server-based playout.


• Troubleshooting and resolving routine technical issues during broadcasts.

Studio and Technical Oversight: 


• Support the oversight of equipment performance, calibration of cameras, lighting systems, studio equipment (cameras, lighting, teleprompters) and failover planning.


• Ensuring the studio and control room remain organized, functional and production ready.


• Working with engineering teams to address and resolve equipment issues proactively.


• Maintaining responsibility for the delivery and quality assurance of flagship programs on all intended platforms.

Media Systems and Technology: 


• Supporting newsroom workflows, content ingest, editing, and playback systems.


• Assisting in the implementation of new technologies and troubleshooting server-based systems.

Collaboration and Team Development: 


• Collaborate with producers and other editorial staff to ensure technical readiness.


• Actively learn and develop skills on technology upgrades.


• Participating in workflow optimization and control room system enhancements.

Skills and experience you will bring: 


• Post-secondary education in broadcast technology or related field.


• Minimum 4 years of experience in control room leadership and broadcast operations.


• Expertise in MOSART systems, IP workflows, and cloud-based media systems.


• Proficiency in automated control room systems and newsroom management tools.


• Strong technical knowledge of switchers, audio consoles, robotic cameras, and other broadcast equipment.


• An initiative-taking approach to studio upkeep, ensuring a functional and professional environment.


• Advanced troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve complex technical challenges under tight deadlines with real-time crisis management experience.


• Strong project management, communication, and leadership abilities, fostering collaboration across multiple teams.


• A commitment to continuous learning and adapting to the evolving broadcast landscape.
