What can you expect from this position?

The Associate Director, Community Engagement is a high-visibility leadership role responsible for driving and delivering measurable community and social impact initiatives for Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Reporting to the Director, Community Engagement and Impact, this role leads the development and implementation of key strategic initiatives, including community engagement and outreach, community consultations, community investment, Indigenous relations, and the stakeholder tours program.

You will independently manage and execute strategic programs, actively engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including civic leaders, Indigenous partners, residents, and community organizations, to strengthen relationships, build trust, and create meaningful social and reputational benefits that reinforce the airport's social license and support its strategic growth.

As the Associate Director, Community Engagement, you will:

  • Lead the development and execution of the annual community engagement, public consultation, and Indigenous relations plans and strategies.
  • Lead the planning, design, and delivery of public consultations related to major airport growth and development programs, ensuring transparency, regulatory alignment, and meaningful community participation.
  • Manage and optimize the Propeller Project, Toronto Pearson's community investment program, and oversee public education initiatives, including the Stakeholder/Public Tour Program.
  • Steward key community investment partners, deliver program activities, and advance investment practices toward industry best standards.
  • Cultivate and sustain trusted relationships with residents, elected officials, Indigenous partners, and key community stakeholders.
  • Serve as a senior advisor on internal and cross-sector committees, integrating community investment strategies across business initiatives.
  • Monitor community sentiment and emerging issues, providing strategic counsel to Senior Leadership to proactively mitigate risks and strengthen reputation.
  • Build consensus and influence stakeholders to strengthen the airport's social license while balancing community and operational priorities.
  • Establish annual engagement targets, monitor effectiveness, and measure impact to ensure continuous improvement and maximize results.
  • Provide strategic clarity by translating the GTAA's vision and strategy into actionable engagement goals and enabling confident team decision-making.
  • Champion process improvement and innovation, empowering team ownership and knowledge transfer to enhance efficiency.
  • Maintain 24/7 business continuity coverage on a rotational basis with other management staff (approximately six weeks per year).

This is the role for you, if you have:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in community engagement, public consultations, ESG/CSR, grantmaking, social impact consulting, in a nonprofit management role, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 8 years of people management experience, with demonstrated success building high performing, highly skilled and motivated teams.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the administration and allocation of funding for community grants.
  • Experience dealing with diverse communities, community groups, and community engagement programming.
  • Experience and demonstrated success managing and implementing programs which have yielded positive reputational growth and have built social impact.
  • Experience in talent management, talent acquisition, talent communications.
  • Ability to provide strategic leadership in developing, delivering, and translating complex community engagement and public participation programs into actionable insights and social reporting.
  • Ability to expertly manage programs and projects in fast-paced, complex environments, using diplomacy and process orientation to successfully guide multi-stakeholder teams and deliver high-quality initiatives.
  • Ability to cultivate and leverage strong networks across civic, NGO, and resident groups to advance organizational objectives, influence stakeholder perceptions, and serve as a trusted external community advisor.
  • Post-secondary degree or a combination of education and relevant experience in Communication, Public Affairs, Community Relations or Public Consultation.
  • Valid G Driver's License, or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain and retain Transportation Security Clearance at the designated level for the position.
