Full-time, term position, starting on December 1, 2025, and ending on August 31, 2030

The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF), located on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlil̓w̓ətaɬ nations since 1917, is a union of professionals representing over 51,000 public school teachers throughout the province of BC. As an organization, we are dedicated to advancing learning conditions for students concurrently with advocating for BC's public school teachers and the teaching profession. We are also deeply committed to democratic decision-making and supporting the engagement of the teachers who make up our member base. The BCTF office building is situated in close proximity to the Canada Line and other major transit routes in a central Vancouver location. The BCTF provides an exceptional working environment where respect, learning, and professional growth are championed and valued.

Please note, this is a full-time, in-person position based out of 550 West 6th Avenue, in Vancouver.

Function and purpose

Reporting to the Director, Field Service Division (FSD), the Assistant Director, General Field Service Support provides Field Service advice and support and assists with on-going and emerging issues in the work of the division in a generalist capacity.

Principal duties and responsibilities

  • provides advice and support to Field Service contacts on emerging and on-going issues, including local arbitration and grievance support.
  • assists with the preparation of support materials for locals.
  • assists with collective agreement implementation and pre-bargaining, bargaining, and post-bargaining tasks and projects.
  • works on case building and bargaining related research projects.
  • research and write reports on a variety of issues.
  • develop and facilitate training at Federation events such as Summer Leadership Conference, Federation Leadership Institute, and Zone meetings.
  • collaborate with people in FSD and other divisions.

Other duties and responsibilities

  • co-ordinates the BCTF Working and Learning Conditions/Bargaining Advisory Committee.
  • updates and maintains the currency of the Collective Bargaining Handbook.
  • responsible for other duties and Federation initiatives as assigned.

Required qualifications

  • Education
  • successful completion of a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree or a university degree and completion of a teacher education program

  • Experience and competencies

    • recent and relevant training, education, and experience in the areas of collective agreement negotiation, administration, grievance handling, and dispute resolution
  • knowledge of relevant legislation including the BC Labour Relations Code, and the School Act
  • recent experience in grievance case assessment and skill in identifying, costing, and building the case for bargaining objectives
  • comprehensive knowledge of Federation bargaining history
  • excellent communication, organizational and administrative skills, and computer literacy
  • ability to function collaboratively within a team while maintaining high standards and exercising sound judgement in meeting individual responsibilities
  • demonstrated ability to effectively manage time while handling multiple concurrent priorities
  • demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and inclusion, and to on-going learning in this regard
  • detailed knowledge of BCTF professional, social justice, and political initiatives
  • voluntary and/or elected service in teacher organization work
  • experience as a public school teacher, preferably in British Columbia.

  • Other desired qualifications, skills, and abilities

    • flexibility to work evenings and weekends
  • flexibility to travel
  • ability to communicate in French would be an asset
  • understanding of issues of social justice, equity, diversity, decolonization, and inclusion (JEDDI) with a desire to further develop in this area.

Compensation

A competitive compensation package will be provided including a starting salary of $110,008.59 per annum (however, may differ if applicant has previous BCTF staff experience), a Special Allowance of $3,280.92 per annum, and excellent benefits including:
