JOB DESCRIPTION: ORGANISER-MEMBERSHIP OUTREACH
Selkirk College Students' Union
The Organiser-Membership Outreach shall be primarily responsible for collaborating with the Board members to execute the advocacy, campaigns, and college relations functions of the Students' Union. The Organiser-Membership Outreach will also be responsible for working with the Board, volunteers, and staff to create and implement a membership outreach plan that increases awareness of the services of the Students' Union through events.
QUALIFICATIONS
All Organisers shall have the following qualifications:
A high school diploma plus some post-secondary education.
Thorough knowledge of the student movement and its aims is an asset.
Experience working on post-secondary education issues, specifically those related to students.
Experience implementing social justice campaigns and undertaking advocacy work;
Experience executing customer/member service functions.
Experience handling cash and operating a point-of-sale system.
Basic experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
Experience producing reports, making presentations and undertaking basic office administration functions;
Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills; and
A valid driver's license and vehicle to travel to all campuses.
2 to 3 years of working experience in the advocacy, not-for-profit, or post-secondary sector is an asset.
The Organiser-Membership Outreach shall have the following specific experience:
Working within college governance structures and having a working understanding of legislation governing the administration of post-secondary institutions
Implementing public awareness or political campaigns
Planning and executing events for small and large groups
Creating marketing and advertising campaigns for events and services.
Developing or executing government relations strategies
An understanding of post-secondary appeal structures and a commitment to procedural fairness and principles of natural justice.
DUTIES
All Organisers shall have the following common duties:
Assist with customer service and front-line service delivery, including reception and sales duties;
Assist with the execution of Students' Union events and activities;
Assist members of the Board in executing their duties by providing counsel, advice, and direct assistance;
Attend the Students' Union meetings, such as the Board, Sub-Committees, Executive and General Meetings, as a resource person and take meeting notes as required.
Proactively promote the benefits of membership in the Students' Union and BC Federation of Students in the execution of duties and dealings with general members;
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Students' Union's structures, bylaws, policies, procedures, contracts and rules of order;
Attend workshops and conferences as may be required from time to time; and
Work collectively as a team with other members of staff, and specifically with other organizing staff.
DUTIES
Organiser-Membership Outreach shall have the following duties:
Liaise between the College and the Union on all matters relating to the experience of members
Coordinate the development and/or execution of a campaign, government relations, and coalition work strategy.
Attend Board of Governors and Education Council meetings and assist student representatives to participate and prepare for meetings, when assistance is requested.
Act as the Ombudsperson to the institution and assist members in navigating the structure of the institution.
Prepare for yearly presentations to the Board of Governors on the needs of students.
Maintain regular contacts with federal, provincial, and municipal government officials and meet regularly to discuss the needs of their student constituents.
Lead the oversight of the annual elections, by-elections, and referenda process of the Students' Union; and new board orientation.
Ensure meeting documents for all Union meetings of the Board, Executive, Committees, and General meetings are produced in a timely fashion.
Coordinate the management of Union services.
Create an annual events plan and oversee the planning, coordination, and implementation of such annual events and other events as mandated by the Board.
Create event outlines before and reports immediately after each event.
Assist existing student-led group activities and collaborate with the college in enhancing the campus community network.
Act as a server and licensee at any events involving alcohol as needed.
Facilitate the setup and teardown of all Union events.
Maintain event supplies and equipment.
Develop a communications strategy and manage communication tools such as the website, social media, etc., and
Execute other duties as assigned by the Board.
Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 14 months
Pay: $28.00-$30.00 per hour
