The Field Safety Advisor has responsibility and accountability for ensuring workplace safety at their specific site through administering and monitoring the safety program and ensuring its ongoing effectiveness. This role monitors and ensures occupational health and safety compliance, issues permits for high-risk work, investigates accidents/incidents, aids in the coordination of site emergency responses, conducts workplace safety audits and inspections, provides safety training, and plays a consultative role in the development of Company safety policies, procedures, and work instructions. An important part of this role is to mentor and facilitate a cultural/behavioral change in the workplace relative to employees accepting responsibilities for their own safety in all activities. This is a full-time position and you must be available to work weekends and various shifts.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 203 East Esplanade, North Vancouver.

What you'll do

  • Identifies potential workplace hazards, unsafe equipment, work practices or behaviours, and working conditions.
  • Investigates incidents and works closely with various partners to identify causes of loss events and appropriate corrective actions to prevent their recurrence.
  • Maintains records of workplace injuries and illnesses to identify areas of concern.

Assists in training supervisors and workers in appropriate use of equipment and tools.
- Provides instruction to workers in the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including fit testing of respirators for workers as necessary for the scope of work.
- Ensures that fire safety is promoted in all operations, including the minimizing of fire load in all areas of work, the issuance of fire permits for hot works, including a pre-issuance assessment to limit fire events.
- Participates in the development and implementation of a detailed lockout procedure to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for system lockout.
- Provides new employee and sub-contractor orientation sessions to familiarize new personnel with the best information to maintain their personal safety.
- Conducts site safety tours for visitors (customers, potential customers, contractors, government agencies, etc.).
- Keeps abreast of knowledge in occupational health and safety and when needed, upgrades credentials including the maintenance of appropriate levels of First Aid Certification.
- Ensures workers are informed and cognizant of safety rules and regulations by providing advice regarding accurate methods and special needs of workers.
- Triages injured workers in the field, ensuring that the injured is assessed for their condition and their injuries treated in keeping with the attendant's experience and accreditation.
- Assists with health and safety system audits, reviewing findings, working towards implementing changes, and instructing supervisors, subcontractors, and workers on various safety and hygiene issues (e.g. the safe work practices required for the use of hand and power tools).
- Participates in the site emergency response team. Aids in all emergencies and directs the workforce away from danger. Assists emergency personnel with their duties and liaises with local emergency response agencies.
- Conducts initial risk assessments, identifies issues, and proposes appropriate solutions.

Assists with investigating injuries and with formulating solutions and processes to prevent similar types of injuries.
- Conducts equipment calibration, testing and sampling as required.
- Controls the work within confined spaces, including hazard assessments, atmospheric testing, issuance of permits and ensuring that suitable rescue plans are developed and employed for entry.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.

What you'll bring

  • Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Construction Safety Officer or similar accreditation through a recognized training authority.
  • Experience in a heavy industrial construction environment (shipbuilding, mining, oil and gas, wood forest products, power generation), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • OFA Level 3 required / Advanced First Aid under WSBC OHSR.
  • WHIMIS, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection and Aerial Work Platform certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of all applicable Federal and Provincial legislation regarding Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Knowledge of Confined Space & Hot Work processes.
  • Time management, organizational and problem-solving skills including an understanding of accident analysis and prevention.
  • Interpersonal and negotiation skills. Ability to mentor, facilitate and influence a cultural and behavioral change in the workplace regarding safety.
  • Communication skills - both verbal and written, with the ability to transfer knowledge to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to work independently and initiate new insights to challenge the status quo.

Sophisticated digital literacy.
- Ability to enter confined spaces as well as work at heights.

Ability to work various shifts and Weekends.
- Ability to work overtime.
- Ability to participate in Emergency Response Team and conduct all related functions and responsibilities.

The estimated salary for this position is $84,600 - $103,400. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
