Archaeological Project Manager

Assistant Manager

Purpose of Position:

The Archaeological Project Manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of any given archaeological project they are assigned or chose to take on, under the direction of the Assistant Manager. This position includes but is not limited to: preparing proposed budgets and scopes of work, supporting contract coordination, regular and ongoing communication with clients and government regulators, communicating with and supporting the KSAS team in applying for, holding and closing all required permits, delegating tasks and communicating with the rest of the KSAS team, managing the preparation and completion analysis and reporting, and actively seeking opportunities for improving operations and archaeological methodology.  All responsibilities are governed by the policies and bylaws of Tk'emlups te Secwepemc and the
BC Heritage Conservation Act
and guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Office work (80%)

  • Preparing or contributing to proposals, scopes of work and cost estimates.

  • Securing heritage inspection, investigation and alteration permits.

  • Designing and overseeing archaeological field programs.

  • Conducting background research and report reviews.

  • Planning and logistics for field and research projects.

  • Liaising with community members, clients and archaeology personnel.

  • Makes recommendations, in consultation with archaeological staff, regarding the conservation and interpretation of archaeological findings.

  • Conducting or coordinating analysis and preparing technical reports.

  • Preparing summary, interim, and final reports.

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the TteS policies, standards, and procedures.

  • Completes final written reports in accordance with the BC Archaeology Branch permit requirements.

  • Manages project scope, schedule and cost.

  • Professional development.

  • Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the TteS.

  • Fieldwork (15%)

  • Archaeological monitoring, excavation, survey, and testing in a wide range of urban and remote locations.

  • Residential, municipal, industrial and resource extraction work.

  • Community based resource management and research projects.

  • Works safely as per KSAS safety policy and procedures.

  • 5% other related duties as necessary.

  • Assists the project coordinator at the direction of the Assistant Manager.

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

Minimum of 3 years project management experience and strong client engagement skills.

Must have demonstrated report writing, leadership and communications skills.

Level 1 First Aid certificate or willing to take and maintain training.

Must possess knowledge and experience adhering to occupational heath and safety regulations.

Must possess a valid BC Class 5 driver's licence and experience with ATV's, UTV's, snowmobiles.

Must possess a clean driver abstract and maintain clean status throughout employment.

Must complete a Criminal Record Check and maintain clear status throughout employment.

Must be willing to take a pre-access drug and alcohol test and maintain throughout employment.

Must be physically fit and willing to work in challenging environments.

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in archaeology/anthropology or related discipline with sufficient field and supervisory experience in the Plateau Culture Area is considered an asset.

  • Experience focused on archaeology in the Plateau region is considered an asset.

Financial Responsibility:

-Project budget tracking.

-Ensure accuracy and timely submission of timesheets and expenses.

Supervision or Training Duties:

Mentor KSAS staff in the field and office with regards to industry standards, methods and procedures.

Must be accessible by phone to field staff while project activities are underway.

This position may supervise large projects with up to 8 field staff.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and confidently while providing education about archaeology and associated legislation.

  • Experience supervising archaeological field crews

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a deadline orientated environment.

  • Excellent supervisory and/or field management skills

  • Understanding of Secwepemc culture and heritage or experience working with a First Nations organization considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage concurrent activities, keeping staff and colleagues informed.

  • Excellent written and verbal

communication skills, including report writing.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, coordinating and planning skills.

  • Ability to verify, research and collect data and prepare reports and other documents.

  • Proven ability to set priorities and meet project deadlines.

  • Ability to take initiative.

  • Strong tact and diplomacy.

  • S

trong teamwork and cooperation, problem solving and judgement skills.

  • Leadership: ability to lead and mentor archaeological team members to ensure high performance and collaboration.

Special Requirements:

Strong background in project management.

HOURS OF WORK:

Normal Day shifts - 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE:

Starting at $35.87-$45.25/hour depending on education & experience
