The Intake Coordinator is the initial point of contact for the In-Home Family Support Program. The Intake Coordinator receives and assesses requests for service through phone calls, emails, walk-in visits, and client home visits to determine eligibility and complete the intake assessment with families. They provide information about other programs and services available in the agency and community to families who are not eligible to receive In-Home Support services. They respond to crises that present during the process by directly intervening and referring to suitable crisis services.

Key Responsibilities and Activities of the Intake Coordinator Role

  • Through interviews with inquirers, gather information to determine eligibility through assessments of family needs, strengths, and challenges.
  • Assessment and identification of priority of need based on risk and protective factors.
  • Direct follow-up with other service professionals involved with the family for eligibility purposes.
  • Assessing for imminent risk and developing safety plans and/or referral to appropriate service to address imminent risk.
  • Creating Case Files in Electronic File System and administrative tracking in excel.
  • Providing program presentations and overview to collateral agencies and the general public.
  • Working collaboratively with the department staff to identify any emerging community needs and support program development.
  • As needed, provide service coordination, support worker placement planning, or case management for ongoing clients as required for program operations, including coverage for other program Coordinators

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor Degree in social services required, Bachelor of Social Work preferred, with current registration with the Manitoba College of Social Workers.
  • A minimum of two years' related experience working within the social services sector is required.
  • Crisis intervention experience and training is required.
  • Resource and system navigation experience is required
  • Experience working with client management Software is preferred.

  • Other combinations of education and experience will be given due consideration. Current registration/membership with a relevant professional association or regulatory body is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated problem solving and crisis/risk assessment and intervention skills is required
  • Excellent communication skills including writing skills, listening and observation skills
  • A thorough knowledge of Attachment Theory and child development
  • An understanding of the impact of poverty, trauma, mental health-related issues, intimate partner violence, child welfare involvement, addictions, disability, racism and colonization on the functioning of families.
  • A thorough knowledge of local community resources is required
  • Proven ability to collaborate within a team
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, and various web based applications such as google and gmail.
  • Demonstration of cultural competency to work effectively and respectfully with people from different cultures and diverse backgrounds, including consideration of how social, historical contexts and imbalance of power have impacted people's experiences.
  • Ability to practice cultural humility; acknowledging oneself as a learner when understanding others' personal experiences, as well as demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning and self-reflection.
  • Ability to work evenings, as required by client service needs. Occasional weekend work required.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle is considered an asset for travel throughout the City of Winnipeg, not required.
