Facilities Maintenance Technician

Reporting to the Business Development Manager in Yellowknife, the Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for the day-to-day upkeep, safety, and general maintenance of Lakeshore Co-operative's buildings, equipment, and grounds. This role focuses on preventive maintenance by doing daily inspections, identifying issues, and coordinating certified trades people for repairs requiring licensed professionals.
The Facilities Maintenance Technician performs routine tasks such as minor repairs, system checks, equipment upkeep, snow removal, landscaping assistance, and completing work orders. A trade certification is not required, however strong practical skills, reliability, and the ability to recognize and escalate technical issues when necessary.
This is a full-time position. The incumbent will generally work Monday to Friday, however working hours and days may vary depending on maintenance demands. After hours alarm monitoring will be required.
Relationships:
- Works closely with department managers, staff and the Business Development Manager.
- Engages with external stakeholders such as trades companies and service providers
- Monitors and oversees the work of external trades personnel to ensure compliance with standards and project requirements.
Job Duties
Preventive Maintenance & Daily Tasks
- Performs regular preventive maintenance on building systems, equipment, and fixtures (ex: light replacements, minor paint touch-ups, tightening of hardware, basic repairs).
- Conducts daily and weekly checks of mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems to monitor performance, detect issues, and report abnormalities.
- Completes minor plumbing, carpentry, and repair tasks within non-certified scope (ex: replacing washers, caulking, unclogging drains, minor patching).
- Maintains the cleanliness, safety, and organization of maintenance areas and mechanical rooms.
Coordination with Certified Trades People
- Assists the Business Development Manager in coordinating service calls, quotes, and repair work with licensed HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and mechanical contractors.
- Monitors contractors working on-site to ensure safety, access, and adherence to scope of work.
- Documents and report deficiencies, equipment issues, and follow-up actions.
General Facility, Grounds and Events Work
- Maintains inventory of tools, supplies, parts, manuals, and warranty information.
- Assists with moving furniture, equipment, and fixtures as required.
- Sets up/tears down for Co-op meetings and events.
- Provides snow removal and ice safety support during winter months.
- Assists with minor landscaping and general property upkeep in the summer.
- Operates Co-op vehicles and maintenance equipment safely and responsibly.
Administration & Reporting
- Completes maintenance logs, inspection forms, snow logs, and work order documentation.
- Identifies, prioritizes, and recommends maintenance improvements and cost-saving opportunities.
- Attends meetings and safety briefings as required.
Requirements:
- Minimum two (2) years experience in general building or facility maintenance.
- Valid class 5 driver's license is required.
- Ability to perform minor repairs (ex: replacing fixtures, patching, basic plumbing tasks, painting, vehicle upkeep).
- Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to lift and carry heavy items (up to 50 lbs).
- First Aid certification is an asset.
- Must be able to work independently, with little supervision.
- Must be a self-starter with problem solving skills.
- Time management and task prioritization skills.
Work Conditions
- Flexible schedule; may require occasional overtime or early/late shifts.
- After hours alarm monitoring is required.
- Work will be both indoors and outdoors, in temperatures as low as -35 degrees Celsius.
- Exposure to hazards associated with maintenance work (ex: ladders, tools, weather).
