Course Title: MUI1080H5 S – Economic Development Planning

Class Schedule: Winter Term: Thursdays 2PM – 5PM

Dates of Appointment: January 1st, 2026 – April 30th, 2026

Description of Course: This course is meant to provide students with the skills to understand and apply a variety of analytic approaches for regional and community economic development planning. These techniques are used in professional practice to yield information about the behaviour and performance of local economies and to measure the impact of public policy interventions.

With an emphasis on the use of case-study examples, the course will provide students with a solid understanding of the range of policy interventions that are used by economic development practitioners; the context and rationale for selection between economic development policy alternatives; and the suitability of policy alternatives at the spatial scale of the city and the region.

By the end of the course, students should be able to select techniques appropriate to particular situations and information needs, conduct analyses using these methods, critically evaluate the validity of the analytic results obtained, and interpret and clearly explain the results to policy makers.

Position Description: All normal duties related to the design, teaching, and delivery of a university credit course, including weekly lectures, meeting with student teams to guide and advise them on their assignments, holding weekly office hours, marking and evaluating all student assignments, recording student attendance, recording and submitting grades, and communicating with students on course-related matters.

Additional responsibilities include building and maintaining the Quercus course shell; designing the course syllabus, content, and assignments in close consultation with the Program Director; liaising with the Program Director regarding course content and curriculum; and participating in the MUI Case Competition as part of the course.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. (geography, planning, political science or related field) preferred or relevant/equivalent industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience and demonstrated ability in teaching a similar course.

Salary (half course): Minimum $ as per CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement (includes 4% vacation pay).

Anticipated Enrollment: 17
