Instructional Designer – Undergraduate Medical Education

Reporting directly to the UME Administrative Director, Curriculum and Planning and in close collaboration with the members of the PGME and CEPD Instructional Design (ID) teams, the Instructional Designer will be an integral contributor to meeting the University's strategic priorities of enriching the provision of medical education and professional development to its faculty through supporting innovative creation, delivery, review and renewal of UME programs.

The successful candidate will be as assigned a rank of Assistant Instructional Designer, Instructional Designer or Senior Instructional Designer based on their qualifications and experience, as outlined in Article 2.5 of the OPSEU NOSM Local 677 (Unit 1) Collective Agreement. This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU NOSM Local 677 (Unit 1) Collective Agreement. A copy is available on the NOSM website.

Roles and responsibilities are further outlined in the Unit 1, OPSEU 677 Collective Agreement (Article 2.3) and may include but are not limited to the following:

• Work with faculty, educators, physicians, and other health professionals, in the design and development of teaching and learning materials from conceptualization stage to the readiness-for delivery stage

• Under the direct supervision of the UME Administrative Director, Curriculum and Planning, support the instructional design process through established curriculum development, review, and renewal cycles. This would include, but is not limited to:

• identifying necessary resources
• working with curriculum-instructional designers, faculty, content experts, committees' web/graphics design experts, etc. to complete various responsibilities identified in the instructional design process according to the work plan
• seeking out appropriate resources necessary to support the development and delivery of teaching and learning activities
• assisting in the evaluation of learning experiences and implementing necessary revisions

• working in collaboration with staff and faculty members in writing and revising learning sessions

• Under the direction of the UME Administrative Director, Curriculum and Planning assist in developing and maintaining on-line curriculum for the UME portfolio.

• Performing other duties as assigned.

• For the rank of Assistant Instructional Designer (AID), a University degree in a relevant area (i.e. Instructional Design, Health Science, Education, Science Education or related discipline) from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or its equivalent in knowledge and experience.
• For the ranks of Instructional Designer (ID) and Senior Instructional Designer (SID), a Master's degree in a relevant area such as Instructional Design, Health Science, Education, Science Education or related discipline from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or its equivalent in knowledge and experience.

• For the rank of AID, minimum of one (1) year demonstrated experience related to the position in an academic institution or related setting or related field.
• For the rank of ID, minimum of three (3) years professional experience in the field of curriculum and instruction design
• For the rank of SID, minimum of nine (9) years professional experience in areas directly related to the position with at least five (5) years in senior professional positions in a higher education environment or at least five (5) years of professional activity at NOSM of which at least three (3) years shall have been at the rank of ID or equivalent.
• Experience with use of e-learning platforms, including Moodle would be considered an asset.
• Experience with academic instructional and technical writing in medical education would be considered an asset.
• Experience in using curriculum databases would be considered an asset.
• Experience with teaching and delivering public presentations considered an asset.
• Experience in a post-secondary educational and/or health setting an asset.
• Experience in interactive small-group learning an asset.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Knowledge of curriculum instructional design processes
• Knowledge of distance and distributed learning strategies an asset
• Demonstrable knowledge of e-learning platforms and other multimedia-enhanced educational tools
• Experience with database functioning in Microsoft Excel or other software
• Experience in health or medical education an asset
• Experience with small group learning environments an asset
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Ability to meet tight, often changing deadlines
• Ability to work with highly confidential materials
• Organizational and planning skills
• Excellent interpersonal and writing skills
• Flexibility, creativity and willingness to learn

• Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written, and comprehension).
• French/Indigenous language skills would be considered an asset.
