ABOUT THE ROLE:
This is an exciting opportunity for a Principal Hydrogeologist to join a well-established groundwater business and bring your flare and experience to help continue market growth. As Principal Hydrogeologist you will be responsible for providing principal technical hydrogeological expertise in the Canadian water and mining markets and integrating with and supporting global projects. The role will be instrumental in collaborating with commercial, project management, and technical leaders to create opportunities to plan, develop, deliver and operate a range of projects.
This is a key role in supporting growth of the Canadian hydrogeology team, in terms of team development and career growth, building technical capability with a focus on mining. You will be a technical and project lead, as well as delivering technically excellent water services and consultancy services outcomes. You will keep abreast of new methods, technologies and developments impacting our business in order to recommend change to current or new direction by tracking and contributing to industry developments, thus ensuring Montrose is applying the latest technical developments.
You will be a market leader and help drive client and business development in the mining market, and be responsible for winning work, identifying the next strategic opportunities and support the winning of those opportunities. Through regular industry participation, you will develop and maintain strong key client relationships, identify emerging opportunities with clients and act as a trusted advisor to Montrose clients.
Are you looking to…
Have flexibility and autonomy without geographic or profit center limitations to develop, manage and undertake projects and technical studies related to groundwater in support of water resources, and mining, and others as appropriate.
Apply advanced hydrogeological and geoscience principles to solve complex groundwater challenges across all stages of a mine's lifecycle — from exploration, feasibility, and operations through to closure and post-closure.
Lead technically challenging hydrogeological investigations and design studies in support of mining and mine water management.
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to integrate hydrogeology into mine design, environmental assessment, dewatering, permitting, and closure planning.
Partner with long-standing mining clients, regulatory agencies, and technical experts across Canada and internationally.
Join a respected, growing environmental and engineering consultancy committed to technical excellence and innovation.
As a Principal Mining Hydrogeologist, you will be a key technical and strategic leader within Montrose's Hydrogeology Practice. You will provide oversight, mentorship, and direction for complex groundwater programs supporting open pit, underground, and surface mining operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Business Development
Support Market Sector Leads with the strategic growth of Montrose's Mining Hydrogeology services across Canada and globally.
Support the development and implementation of business development strategies in collaboration with Service Directors, Technical Directors, and Market Sector Leads.
Identify, pursue, and win new project opportunities in the mining and water sectors through strong client relationships and technical reputation.
Represent the company in technical and industry forums, professional and industry associations, conferences, and client presentations.
Technical Leadership Across the Mine Lifecycle
Exploration and Feasibility:
Design and interpret hydrogeological site investigations, aquifer testing programs, and baseline water resource assessments. Contribute to feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments (EIA/EIS) by evaluating hydrogeological risks and water supply potential.
Development and Operations:
Develop dewatering and depressurization designs and strategies, groundwater flow and contaminant transport models, and integrated water balance models (e.g., FEFLOW, MODFLOW, MIKE SHE, GoldSim). Support permitting and compliance monitoring programs.
Closure and Post-Closure:
Lead studies on long-term groundwater recovery, pit lake evolution, seepage control, contaminant attenuation, and water quality risk management. Develop conceptual and numerical closure models to support mine reclamation and regulatory closure criteria.
Ensure project quality, technical rigor, and safety are maintained to the highest standard through QA/QC reviews, technical direction, and peer review of deliverables.
Project and Team Management
Provide senior review and technical oversight of hydrogeological studies and modelling assignments.
Supervise and mentor junior, intermediate, and senior hydrogeologists, fostering professional growth and technical excellence.
