Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Assistant to the Dean, Residence Life (ADRL) leads and directs all aspects of the residence life program at Innis College. Working alongside a team of student leaders and staff, the incumbent is responsible for fostering a safe, supportive and inclusive community that is conducive to students' academic success and personal growth. The ADRL develops and oversees a variety of programs, services and initiatives in residence that support students' learning, health and wellbeing, co-curricular involvement and cultural transition.
The ADRL is responsible for the recruitment, training and supervision of a team of residence student staff. The incumbent works closely with the Innis Residence Council and a variety of student clubs to create a vibrant and engaged community, while advising on a variety of matters related to institutional policy and financial management. The ADRL upholds the residence Code of Behaviour and community standards by investigating possible violations and deciding outcomes. They are also responsible for responding to and intervening in a variety of complex and urgent situations, some of which arise after hours.
The ADRL must live in residence at Innis College and accommodation will be provided as a taxable benefit. The ADRL is frequently scheduled to be on-call and must be within a confined radius to attend on-site to urgent and/or timely matters. Although most work is conducted during regular business hours, evening and weekend work is regularly required.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Advising students on co-curricular, academic and personal matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background.
- Planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities.
- Keeping well-informed on crisis intervention and emergency protocols.
- Facilitating educational workshops and seminars.
- Training and coaching student life staff and student leaders.
- Determining appropriate disciplinary actions for breaches of community standards and/or housing policies.
- Applying established standards when responding to emergencies.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or an acceptable combination of recent and equivalent experience.
- Minimum four years' experience working in residence and/or student life in a post-secondary setting, at least two of which must have been in a live-in context. A combination of both professional and meaningful para-professional experience is acceptable.
- Thorough understanding and application of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility theories, especially as applicable to post-secondary students and contexts.
- Demonstrated student-centred, developmental approach to working with students.
- Experience advising and supporting students as they navigate common issues related to early adulthood and the transition to post-secondary education.
- Experience investigating and adjudicating alleged violations of policy and a thorough understanding of the elements of procedural fairness.
- Experience successfully managing emergency situations and responding to crises.
- Experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and services designed to support student success in higher education.
- Experience leading, training, coaching, and motivating student-staff and volunteers.
- Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating programs designed to support student success in a residence life context.
- Experience having developed successful, collaborative relationships with student leaders and groups based on respect, trust, and reciprocity.
- Experience overseeing residence programming including event planning, risk assessment, and financial management.
- Experience working successfully within diverse communities of students, staff, and faculty.
- Demonstrated ability to organize work, establish priorities, and meet deadlines while negotiating unpredictable emergent needs. A high degree of flexibility and adaptability is required.
- Must be able to exercise good judgment and solve problems independently under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and achieve established goals.
