For over 60 years, our programs have addressed crime & its causes in our Kawartha and Peterborough area communities. We practice diverse approaches to violence prevention, intervention, diversion, & response. We work from a trauma and resilience informed, anti-oppressive, restorative lens.

As the Youth Program Facilitator, you will support young people who are involved or at risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system. Youth Program Facilitators provide programming to youth clients, across a variety of areas including justice, education, employment, and mentorship. In addition to programming, you will maintain a caseload of clients, justice-involved and self-referred, which will require liaising with community partners and natural supports. This position works within all the youth programs offered out of the Peterborough office and in-community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate psychoeducational programming for youth and young adults, across a variety of areas, including but not limited to, justice, healthy relationships, conflict management, and well-being.
  • · Engage in outreach and support sessions to assist youth and young adult clients in achieving their immediate and long-term goals to change behaviours, better integrate with the community, and develop practical skills for personal success and well-being.
  • To identify and assess the needs of youth with a view of developing appropriate and meaningful program support, and provide ongoing case management services.
  • Maintain client files and documentation, provide client referrals for internal and external services, and participate in case conferences as appropriate.
  • To provide services through relevant technology and other relevant outlets.
  • Ability to provide services in both individual and group settings.
  • To provide outreach to justice, education, social service, etc. providers to ensure well-matched referrals to the programs.
  • To provide services off-site at community partner offices and other community locations (e.g. Probation offices; Shelters; and Correctional Centers, schools, etc.) as needed.
  • Maintain program statistics, and databases, and assist with program expense tracking and report preparation.
  • Assist the agency in program development through the identification of service gaps and the creation of program materials.
  • Ensure that services delivered are efficient and effective through an outcome evaluation model.
  • Foster a warm, welcoming, restorative, anti-oppressive, trauma/resilience informed space for youth.
  • Take a strength-based approach with each client and adapt programming to their unique needs and interests.
  • Assist agency in maintaining accessible, relevant, responsible services.
  • Deliver services in a way that reflects the racial, cultural, linguistic and gender-specific needs of the community being served.
  • Collaborate with Youth and Community Services team to provide effective program delivery and client supports.
  • Consult regularly with managers about ethical dilemmas, critical incidents, and availability/eligibility criteria for community resources.
  • Attend community meetings as required to promote programs and services, and participate in community-based committees as appropriate.
  • Participate in agency/staff committees as mandated.
  • Stay informed of issues and best practices in the areas of youth work, restorative justice, and mental health.
  • Ensure program delivery protects client, volunteer, and community safety.
  • Adhere to standard professional guidelines and agency protocols on confidentiality and ethics.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by management to improve or enhance the delivery of services, and to meet operational needs.

Job Specifications

Education, Training, and Professional Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, Psychology, Criminology, or closely related field required
  • Minimum 3-4 years of experience in justice services required, preferably with youth
  • Minimum 3-4 years of experience working with youth, required
  • Experience working with racialized and gender diverse clients required
  • Experience with program delivery, facilitation, and interviewing and counselling required
  • Relevant training certificates an asset (i.e. Motivational Interviewing, Anti-Racism and Decolonization, Trauma-Informed Care, Positive Space, Restorative Conference Training)
  • Thorough knowledge of local community resources and partner agencies
  • Knowledge of the structure of the Justice System in its functions, procedures, roles of key players, impact on the community, and relevant legislation (Youth Criminal Justice Act) required
  • Knowledge of sentencing principles, alternative measures, and restorative justice principles
  • Standard First-Aid and CPR Level C

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to exert up to 30 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to engage in sitting, standing, and walking or a mix of all three for long periods of time.
  • Ability to drive for short to medium periods of time to preform duties of the job, e.g. outreach into the surrounding community, attending community events, program supply shopping, and occassional travel to other JHSK office locations.

Other Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Due to working with youth, it is expected that the successful candidate provide and maintain a clear Broad Record Check with vulnerable sector screening as a condition of employment
  • Must have Valid Ontario Driver's License (G-class) and reliable access to a car to preform duties of this job
  • This position is an on site position, in Peterborough, based out of our 70 Hunter St. West office in Peterborough and also working in other JHSK offices and community settings.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evening work.
  • Regular exposure to secondary traumatic stress (STS), which may contribute to the experience of compassion fatigue.
  • There may be exposure to hazards from time to time, e.g. violence, bodily fluids and waste, communicable diseases, working alone, slips trips and falls, and other exposures.
