Senior Research Fieldworker

Full Time, Term to March 31, 2027

It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. By incorporating the principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population. 

The Senior Research Fieldworker plays a leadership role in the Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey (QNIHS) within the National Capital Region (NCR). This position requires Inuit candidates with advanced lived and professional expertise, capable not only of conducting highly sensitive survey interviews but also of mentoring other fieldworkers, providing guidance on trauma-informed practice, and ensuring the consistency and integrity of all community-facing work.

This role bridges frontline survey administration with team leadership and methodological fidelity. The Senior Research Fieldworker ensures that participants feel safe, respected, and supported while also reinforcing data integrity, providing feedback to project leadership, and supporting ongoing community engagement.

In preparation for data collection, the interviewer will be required to attend and successfully complete a paid 10- day survey training.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct the most complex or sensitive interviews with a high degree of cultural safety and confidentiality.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all surveys administered using electronic tablets, with errors tracked through data quality checks.
  • Create a warm, inclusive and supportive environment for participants, while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Serve as a role model for best practices in trauma-informed interviewing.
  • Transfer collected data to the regional Data Analyst within 48 hours of collection, following all security protocols.
  • Take the lead on supporting participants with acute needs, ensuring proper referrals are made to crisis or health services.
  • Document and track all participant referrals to community resources, ensuring confidentiality and proper follow-up where appropriate.
  • Represent the QNIHS at a higher level, including in community meetings, presentations, or when liaising with partner organizations.
  • Attend and actively contribute to scheduled working groups, sub-committees, and partnership meetings in the NCR, representing the survey team professionally and respectfully.
  • Provide analysis of services, to identify gaps, successes, and provide recommendations for improved services. Participate in community of practice meetings.
  • Handle more complex community feedback and escalate issues requiring leadership input.
  • Submit accurate progress reports on data collection bi-weekly (or as scheduled) and participate actively in team meetings, contributing to a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Contribute to bi-weekly and quarterly reporting with analysis of field-level challenges and successes.
  • Provide cultural and methodological insights to strengthen the project.
  • Mentor, coach, and provide informal supervision to Health Research Fieldworkers.
  • Offer debrief and emotional support to colleagues following difficult interviews.
  • Support team development by sharing strategies, cultural knowledge, and effective practices.
  • Review data quality submitted by fieldworkers; flag issues and support corrective actions.
  • Provide feedback to Data Analysts and the Research Manager on trends, challenges, and participant.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have knowledge of Inuit culture, values, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and traditional practices. Experience living or working in an Inuit community, knowledge of issues related to Inuit health and wellness. Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills, demonstrated leadership or mentorship experience. High level of autonomy, resourcefulness and adaptability, curious nature, eagerness to learn and superior listening skills. Excellent typing, data entry, attention to detail and strong writing skills (grammer, punctuation, style).  High degree of comfort navigating sensitive or traumatic conversations.

Community College or Undergraduate Degree in Research, heal, indigenous practices, social work or counselling is preferred.

Two to three years' experience in research, health, counselling or community based worked is required. One to two year's experience in data collection, one-on-one interviews or customer service and previous experience conducting research, research analysis or writing reports in required. One to two years' in research, health or healthcare, Indigenous studies, counselling/intake and preferred. One to two years' experience with group facilitation and community engagement, leading or training in trauma-informed interviewing practice and contributing to date quality assurance or research reporting is preferred.

Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, video-conferencing platforms and electronic records management applications and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check with results acceptable to TI is required. Availability to work evenings and weekends as required is preferred. Fluent in English, written and oral is required and ability to speak Inuktitut is preferred.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary range is $67,000 to $70,000
