Position Summary

The Barn Crew/Stable Assistants play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of the hospital. This part-time position supports the daily operations of the barn and hospital environment, ensuring a high standard of care for equine patients and a professional, welcoming atmosphere for clients and staff. The ideal candidate is reliable, hardworking, and comfortable working around horses in a fast-paced veterinary setting.

Reporting Structure

This position reports to Barn Manager, Lead RVT, Practice Manager, and Managing Veterinarian

Key Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain horse stalls, including mucking, bedding, and hand-washing stall walls
  • Feed and water patients according to veterinary instructions
  • Prepare stalls for new patients by stripping, disinfecting, and re-bedding
  • Transport hay from storage to barns and assist with feed area organization
  • Maintain cleanliness of barn aisles, outdoor pens, parking lots, and other common areas
  • Groom horses as directed by veterinary staff
  • Operate equipment such as lawn tractors and skid steers safely and efficiently
  • Assist with the respectful removal of deceased patients from stalls or surgical areas
  • Empty and manage waste and recycling bins throughout the facility
  • Monitor and place orders for stall shavings and other barn supplies
  • Track and report maintenance needs around the facility
  • Perform occasional painting and upkeep of stalls and other areas
  • Support other facility-related projects and tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with horses is needed
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to learn and retain information including vital biosecurity measures
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanour

Working Conditions

  • This position involves physical labour and regular exposure to animals, dust, hay, and outdoor elements
  • Must be available to weekends and holidays as needed

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.00-$19.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 24 per week
