Opportunity
PCRS seeks an experienced Cook for The 1.1.2, a 24 hour, 30 bed, transitional housing program in Surrey.
The Cook will work alongside and under the direction of the Kitchen lead to assist with the planning, preparing and delivery of nutritional meals seven days a week. The position could also be responsible for purchasing groceries, maintaining inventory and ensuring the kitchen and work space meets Fraser Health cleanliness and safety standards. The staff works within the strategic objectives of Pacific Community Resources Society (PCRS) to ensure the provision of effective and efficient services to our participants. Recognition that the youth are diverse, incorporating diverse cultural foods while maintaining nutritional standards is essential.
This position requires a flexible shift schedule that includes morning, evenings, and weekend rotations. Cook positions are on-site positions and not available for remote or hybrid work arrangements.
Responsibilities
- Provide healthy, nutritious meals for residents of the 1.1.2.
- Maintain kitchen documentation and records for reporting, maintaining Fraser Health safety standards including sanitation and food temperatures.
- Facilitate food sustainability and knowledge within the 1.1.2.; actively participate and assist in coordinating food recovery activities with partners and community services.
- Ensure good safety practices using a preventative approach; training includes kitchen health and safety skills, knife safety, kitchen communication, cleaning procedures, equipment safety, professional food safety and basic cooking methods.
- Liaise with onsite partners to coordinate kitchen access to external and internal groups; orientate volunteers, partners and staff to health and safety procedures in the kitchen.
- Provide food support and consultation surrounding special events
- Responsible for regular kitchen and equipment cleaning
- Handle emergency situations safely and in accordance with agency and OHS policy and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers and staff, and participate in team efforts.
- Participate in professional development and training.
- Participate on committees, working groups, and associations; and develop community networks relevant to managed services
- Provide strengths based feedback to youth to encourage learning and growth while maintain kitchen safety.
- Liaise with onsite partners and facility rentals; coordinate kitchen access to external and internal groups; orientate youth, volunteers, partners an staff to health and safety procedures in the kitchen.
- Act as a resource for food programs throughout the Centre
- Work closely with team leaders, manager and occupational safety and health site rep to ensure kitchen and food safety.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers and staff, and participate in team efforts.
Qualifications
- Criminal Record Check, including the vulnerable sector
- Professional Cook Level One certification or two years as a cook. Academic work in nutrition, health sciences and social services is considered.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating a commercial kitchen.
- Current Standard First Aid certificate
- Food Safe Level 2
- Experience training culinary skills to groups and individuals.
- Menu planning; incorporating diverse cultural foods, including local cultural foods
- Experience creating and working with youth within a culturally inclusive environment for staff, partners, and participants.
