Position Summary:
Reporting to the Roads Foreperson, the Winter Patrol position is responsible for monitoring and maintaining safe roadway conditions during the winter season. This role includes performing night patrols, assessing road surface conditions, and operating snow plow and sanding equipment as required. The position ensures compliance with Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards (O. Reg. 239/02) and Township Winter Control Policy, while promoting public safety and efficient winter operations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Patrol & Monitoring
a) Perform winter night patrol on a seven-day-a-week rotation basis.
b) Patrol roadways and monitor weather and driving conditions.
c) Complete detailed road surface condition reports and determine if winter maintenance is required in accordance with Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards and Township policy.
d) Patrol all roadways for deficiencies outside of winter maintenance standards.
e) Calling operators and labourers to perform winter duties as required.
2. Equipment Operation & Maintenance
a) Operate a pickup truck plow/sander for snowplowing and sanding/salting of primary roads.
b) Maintain assigned vehicles in a clean and tidy condition; perform daily inspections and record deficiencies.
c) Make minor repairs as required.
3. Emergency & Support Duties
a) Respond to emergency situations, which may include:
· Removal of fallen trees across roadways.
· Installing barricades for road closures or detours.
· Picking up debris on the roadway.
b) Perform routine maintenance for the Infrastructure department, such as:
· Streetlight inspections and reporting.
· Minor sign repairs.
· Response/repairs for service requests.
c) Respond to after-hours calls from the Call Center.
4. Health & Safety Compliance
a) Comply with all health and safety practices, standard operating guidelines, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
b) Wear personal protective equipment as required.
c) Report hazards to the Supervisor.
5. Other Duties
a) Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule:
- Contract from January 1st to April 30th, 2026.
- Rotation: 4 on / 3 off and 3 on / 4 off over a two-week period.
- 80 hours per pay period (two weeks):
- Week 1: Four hour shifts (44 hours).
- Week 2: Three hour shifts (36 hours).
- Shifts start at 8:00 PM daily. Work schedule will include weekends and statutory holidays.
Education, Experience and Qualifications:
- Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent.
- Must have a valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license, with clean abstract.
- Demonstrated experience operating snowplow equipment with at least one year of road patrol experience.
- Chainsaw training considered an asset.
- A valid Ontario DZ driver's license in good standing considered an asset.
