Westhills EVS is located 10 minutes west of Stony Plain, Alberta and 30 minutes west of Edmonton and is easily accessed off of TransCanada Highway 16 on Range Road 25. You must have reliable transportation as we are not on a bus route.

THE JOB

The Reproduction Assistant (Repro Assistant) role is seasonal, starting in March and ending in mid to late August. Their goal is to make the repro day flow as efficient as possible and complete repro tasks with a high degree of care and accuracy. The Reproduction Assistant reports to the Owner/Repro Department Manager.

Duties:

Repro Vet Support:

  • Work with Repro DVM to complete the cancel confirm mare list, any frozen semen breeds.
  • Work with Repro DVM to complete checking in clinic mares.
  • Review schedule for the day and add extender/embryo flush bags to incubator.
  • Assist repro vet while working through the morning mare list.
  • Process uterine lavage tubes.
  • Setup and directly assist with embryo transfers and transfers at repro barn.

Patient Care:

  • Assist Intern or Repro DVM with IU treatment protocols.
  • Administer oxy parties and ovulation induction medications.
  • Prepare meds for discharge.
  • End-of-day: Evaluate foaling out mares and clean foal alerts. Wrap tails and move into barn if necessary.

Repro Clinic Organization & Prep:

  • Stock treatment carts, medicine cart and lab area.
  • List items that need to be ordered.
  • End-of-day: Clean up the reproduction department and stock fluids, medicine and ultrasound carts for the following morning.

Front End Support:

  • Check with Reception at the beginning of the day to see if there is anything they need and if there are prescriptions that need to be filled.
  • Assist with calls as needed.

Other:

  • Attend toolbox meeting.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Assist and train new repro assistants as required.
