Underground Labourer- Shaft, Tunnel

About the Job

- Horizontal Tunneling
The work is all underground — tight, physical, and hands-on. You'll be working with a small, experienced team digging by hand, setting steel and timber, and keeping the shaft and tunnel safe and stable as we go deeper. If you've been in shafts, tunnels, or other deep underground jobs before, you know what to expect — hard work, steady pace, and solid teamwork.
Schedule
- Monday to Friday, from 7:00 am to 3:30 or 4:30 pm
- Must be flexible to work overtime, travel and work weekends or holidays to accommodate business needs.
Location: Edmonton

- $25-$33 hour, rate is dependent on experience level

Duties and Responsibilities
- Excavate and support vertical shafts using rib & lagging
- Assist with horizontal hand-dug tunneling
- Trim and clean shaft/tunnel to properly fit supports.
- Install and secure heavy steel ribs during tunnel work
- Remove and hoist excavated materials, keeping work area clean
- Safely handle, lower and position construction materials and equipment underground
- Set up and maintain dewatering systems to control groundwater
- Support surface cleanup, spoil removal and site organization
- Following all safety procedures, confined space rules, and communication signals with the hoist and topman.
Requirements
- Solid experience working underground, in shafts, tunnels, or deep excavation.
- Good understanding of rib and lagging ground support methods.
- Comfortable with mucking out, manual excavation, and working in confined spaces.
- Able to recognize and deal with water inflow and dewatering situations.
- Physically fit and used to tough, hands-on work.
- Physical stamina and a willingness to work in variable site and weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, bend, crouch, kneel, reach, and climb for long periods of time.
- Ability to repetitively lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
- A serious attitude toward safety and clear communication underground.
- CSTS 2020 and WHMIS 2015 Certification
- Considered an asset if you have the following: Confined Space Entry and Monitoring, H2S Alive, Fall Protection, Elevated Work Platform
- Ability to pass a pre-employment Drug and Alcohol test. This includes but is not limited to legal drugs (Cannabis/THC) and illegal drugs.
- Ability to provide a clear criminal record check
