Reporting to the Legal Administrative Services Manager and under the direction of a lawyer, the paralegal will primarily be responsible for managing a caseload of files in the litigation and labour groups. The duties of this position mainly consist of drafting, compiling, and reviewing documents. They may be asked to conduct legal and factual research on assigned matters to support solicitors. This position will also be the point of contact for stakeholders to gather the initial information for the file and provide updates when necessary.

The paralegal will work autonomously and must demonstrate significant judgement, initiative, and decision-making skills. The position requires a considerable and thorough knowledge of Departmentallegal operations, policies, and procedures, legal terminology, and legal and court processes and regulations. The paralegal is also required to handle a high volume of files independently with little instruction.

As the Litigation and Labour Paralegal, you will:

  • Draft documents agreements, and correspondencefor the Solicitors
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders on the progression of files
  • Manage multiple complex files with competing deadlines, ensuring strict compliance with legislative requirements
  • Maintain paper and electronic files, file intake
  • Provide general legal support to senior solicitors in the litigation and labour teams
  • Other responsibilities as directed

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Legal Assistant Certificate or Diploma in Administration from a recognized institution. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

  • 10 years' experience working in a legal setting specifically in the specialized areas of Litigation and Labour law.

  • Experience in creating and maintaining accurate records and files in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Supervisory experience and ability to provide guidance, oversight and mentorship would be an asset.

  • Ability to work independently with great attention to detail.

  • Organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize workloads, and manage concurrent assignments and meeting strictdeadlines.

  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, outside lawyers, department heads, city staff and other stakeholders.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate information through various methods to multiple levels of the organization, stakeholders and the public.

  • Ability to handle confidential and politically sensitive matters with tact, diplomacy and integrity.

  • IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Applicants submitting foreign credentials require an official academic assessment report issued by a recognized Canadian assessment service at application.
