Position Profile
The Drop-In Cook – Relief is responsible for assisting in the delivery of the food program—including planning, cooking, serving, and cleaning—for the Drop-In Program and Men's Hostel, as applicable. This position supports the smooth operation of the kitchen and meal services while maintaining a respectful, inclusive, and safe environment for clients and staff.
This is a unionized position reporting to Drop-In Manager/Food Security Supervisor as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
· Prepare and serve hot, nutritious, and tasty meals for clients in the Drop-In Program and Men's Hostel.
· Treat all clients with dignity and respect in every interaction.
· Receive, check, record, sort, and store food and supplies; ensure proper rotation based on expiry dates.
· Lift, carry, and maintain storage areas to ensure safety and organization.
· Take and record refrigerator and freezer temperatures, reporting any issues promptly.
· Maintain all documentation required by management, the City of Toronto, and Toronto Food Handlers guidelines.
· Prepare food and beverages by cleaning, chopping, mixing, portioning, and labeling ingredients.
· Load and transport dishes, utensils, and trays for meal service.
· Collect and dispose of waste appropriately, saving leftovers when directed.
· Serve meals according to supervisor instructions for heating, plating, and portioning.
· Check and document food temperatures, freshness, and diet accuracy.
· Clear and clean tables, dishes, and kitchen equipment after meals.
· Sanitize all kitchen areas and appliances including slicers, steamers, fridges, and freezers.
· Follow all WHMIS, Health & Safety, and sanitation standards when handling cleaning products.
· Sort and dispose of garbage, recycling, and compost appropriately.
· Maintain garbage, recycling, and compost areas in a clean and sanitary manner.
· Sweep and mop floors and notify the supervisor of any repairs or unsafe conditions.
· Attend team meetings and in-service training as required.
· Support cross-departmental collaboration and contribute to a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
· Perform other duties as required to support efficient program operations.
Required Qualifications
· Experience cooking in a professional food service environment, including for large groups.
· Knowledge of nutrition for diverse diets, including those preventing diabetes and other health conditions.
· Formal culinary training from an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
· Experience preparing meals for vulnerable community members and utilizing donated food is an asset.
· Valid Food Handlers Certificate (as required by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Standards).
· Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, and relevant sanitation legislation.
· Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies safely.
· Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
· Commitment to preparing and serving meals in a way that respects the dignity and diversity of all clients this winter season
Job Type: Seasonal
Contract length: 5 months
Pay: $26.42 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 15 per week
