Summary of Position

Kanawemahwasowin Kamik Inc. (KKI) is seeking a permanent, full-time Cree Language and Teachings Coordinator to join our team. This position focuses on supporting the transmission, restoration, and everyday use of the Cree language and cultural teachings across KKI programs and the wider Ermineskin Nation. The Coordinator works in relationship with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, fluent speakers, families, and youth, ensuring that teachings are shared in ways that honour protocol, respect lineage, and strengthen belonging. Through this work, the Coordinator contributes to healing, resilience, and identity restoration, supporting the long-term wellbeing and unity of children, families, and the Nation. The Coordinator will be responsible for:

· Establishing and nurturing respectful, long-term relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and fluent Cree speakers, guided by mutual care and reciprocity.

· Facilitating Nation engagement sessions to identify language and cultural revitalization priorities, rooted in Nation voice and family well-being.

· Creating intergenerational learning opportunities, connecting youth and families with Elders through ceremony, land-based learning, language circles, and seasonal teachings.

· Collaborating with Elders to document Cree teachings and language using culturally appropriate and ethically sound methods, with respect for protocols and safeguards.

· Ensuring documentation aligns with traditional protocols, seasonal cycles, and Nation values, incorporating land stewardship and seasonal knowledge as the basis for programming.

· Designing and implementing Cree language programs, including immersion camps, storytelling circles, and rites of passage, focusing on holistic well-being, cultural continuity, and inclusive participation.

· Coordinating logistics for language and cultural events, ensuring accessibility and removing barriers to participation, with a commitment to caring for the most vulnerable and equitable access.

· Aligning programming with existing Cree language initiatives across education, wellness, and Nation sectors, reflecting cross sector collaboration for overall well being.

· Working with training and development teams to create culturally grounded educational resources, emphasizing capacity building and respectful knowledge sharing.

· Supporting the integration of Cree language into school curricula, Nation signage, and public messaging, ensuring language presence in daily life with Nation respect.

· Assisting in the development of digital tools (e.g., audio archives, apps, syllabics guides) to support language learning, prioritizing accessibility and empowerment.

· Mentoring staff, youth, and Nation members in Cree language use, cultural protocols, and respectful engagement, grounding mentorship in respect, humility, and Nation welfare.

· Facilitating workshops and training sessions for emerging language learners and educators, emphasizing ongoing learning, capacity building, and generosity of knowledge.

· Advocating for Indigenous knowledge systems and language sovereignty within organizational and Nation planning, centering cultural integrity and Nation empowerment.

· Utilizing online platforms and social media to share teachings, promote events, and engage learners, promoting open, inclusive outreach that strengthens Nation ties.

· Leveraging internet-based tools for archiving, resource dissemination, and Nation outreach, ensuring information access supports well-being.

· Inputting participation data into case management systems in accordance with documentation protocols, upholding accountability and transparent record-keeping.

· Monitoring and evaluating program outcomes, ensuring alignment with Nation goals and funding requirements, with a commitment to continuous improvement for Nation benefit.

· Advocating for Indigenous knowledge systems and parenting sovereignty within organizational planning and policy development, centering family resilience and Nation vitality in governance.

· Participating in seasonal planning, Nation engagement, and ceremonial activities to ensure programming remains responsive and rooted in Nehiyaw (Cree) values, including seasonal stewardship and active Nation engagement.

· Maintaining accurate, respectful, confidential, and up-to-date records of all teachings, ceremonies, and Elder guidance, upholding confidentiality, trust, and accountability.

· Preparing regular reports, analyses, and statistics to support program oversight and strategic planning, including ongoing language initiatives, revitalization, and cultural sustainability, with transparent reporting that supports well-being and continuity.

· Upholding strict confidentiality and adhere to all privacy laws, KKI policies, and legislative requirements, reflecting respect for privacy and responsible conduct.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate's minimum requirements are:

· Diploma or Degree in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Education, Linguistics or in an area relevant to the work performed. A combination of training and experience will be considered.

· Minimum 3 years of experience supporting language and cultural programming, including contributions to Cree language restoration projects in Indigenous Nation or school settings

· Proficiency with technology, Microsoft 365 Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint), and data systems

· Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team

· Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions & teachings, protocols and Nation dynamics.

· Experience working with First Nation organizations & understands intergenerational violence and trauma in Indigenous Nations

· Valid Class 5 driver's license, willingness to travel within the region, access to a personal vehicle, and satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Driver's Abstract, and Child Intervention Check.
