Otter Energy is one of Ontario's largest and most established solar companies, with its roots in solar project construction and maintenance. Otter is seeking a full-time Solar Technician who is passionate about energy and sustainability.

As a Solar Technician, you will gain essential knowledge and exposure to all areas of the business. The ideal candidate is someone with a background in solar or electrical system design who is able to be hands-on and strives to take ownership over what they do.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Solar Technician will work closely with the Operations and Maintenance team to support all technical aspects of troubleshooting, performing electrical repairs, and preventive & corrective maintenance. You will also play an essential role in supporting and implementing the construction and commissioning of commercial and residential solar systems.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on utility-scale systems, including module replacements, firmware updates, and component repairs.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues; execute corrective actions to restore safe, reliable operation.
  • Install and maintain electrical wiring, conduit, and equipment on solar and battery storage projects, including new builds and retrofits.
  • Conduct hot and cold commissioning, system energization, and de-energization procedures.
  • Apply and enforce Lockout/Tagout procedures, safety documentation, and regulatory compliance before, during, and after all work performed.
  • Interpret and work from electrical single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring drawings, and installation details.
  • Perform equipment testing, quality inspections, and project closeout, documenting deficiencies and corrective measures.
  • Manage safe charge/discharge cycles of battery systems.
  • Incorporate risk analysis and safety protocols into daily work to maintain a zero-incident environment.
  • Support electrical power and distribution systems that tie into solar installations and main service panels.
  • Ensure compliance with OEM requirements, company standards, and industry guidelines (CSA Z463, NETA MTS, etc.).
  • Complete daily digital reporting, project records, and safety permits (safety meetings, electrical permits).
  • Participate in equipment selection, procurement, and system improvements.
  • Collaborate with clients, vendors, electricians, and internal teams to meet project objectives.
  • Contribute to project development by identifying issues and providing technical feedback.
  • Work effectively both independently and in a team-based environment to complete assignments safely and on time.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & KEY COMPETENCIES:

  • Willingness to learn new skills, such as solar system design and site analysis
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the solar industry and/or solar design software is considered an asset
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work independently, make decisions, and take responsibility for technical matters
  • Have excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to bend, lift, and twist, as well as the ability to lift 50lbs on a frequent or repetitive basis
  • Knowledgeable of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and possesses a strong safety focus
  • Self-motivated and a strong team player
  • Ability to travel within the province and to work away from home for the workweek

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Journeyman/woman Electrician license required
  • Valid Ontario driver's license
  • Working at Heights certification is an asset
