POSITION SUMMARY

Seabird Island is committed to empowering and supporting families through culturally grounded, holistic services. We are dedicated to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment that respects and values Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and ways of being. We are seeking a Family Life Skills Coach (FLSC) to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance family well-being, strengthen parenting capacity, and foster resilience in a culturally supportive setting.

Under the direction of the Family Development Supervisor, the FLSC provides hands-on, culturally informed guidance to families in the family home. This includes modeling healthy routines, parenting strategies, household management, and life skills that promote strong family bonds. The FLSC supports families in accessing healing, health, and community services, while ensuring culture is embedded in all aspects of programming to nurture self, family, and community connections.

What you'll do

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide life skills coaching with a focus on unobtrusive, positive role modeling.

    Work alongside MCFD or Indigenous delegated agencies in collaboration and coordination of services/goals for the family.
  • Deliver hands-on guidance and support in developing and reinforcing daily routines.
  • Offer coaching and teaching in practical life skills, such as time management, hygiene, and personal responsibility, within a residential setting.

Household Management

  • Lead and coordinate daily household activities including homework support, cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, yard work, and home maintenance.
  • Oversee all household duties to ensure a clean, safe, and supportive living environment.
  • Monitor and contribute to the family's operating budget for essentials such as groceries, clothing, and emergency needs.
  • Assist with purchasing and maintaining inventory of groceries and household supplies.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure the home adheres to all health, fire, and safety regulations.
  • Assist with household supervision and always ensure client safety.
  • Provide immediate response and support during crises and report incidents as required.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and professional documentation.
  • Submit reports on a weekly and monthly basis, as required.
  • Regularly update client records in the Mustimuhw database.

Professionalism and Team Collaboration

  • Demonstrate maturity, reliability, empathy, and patience in all interactions.
  • Uphold professional conduct, boundaries, and ethical standards aligned with the values of First Nations communities.
  • Work independently while contributing actively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and maintain open, respectful communication.

Client Engagement

  • Communicate and reinforce household rules and responsibilities in a polite yet assertive manner.
  • Plan and participate in social, recreational, and vocational activities with clients.
  • Support clients in building confidence and independence through everyday tasks and skill-building opportunities.

Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values

What you bring

  • A diploma in social services, community support worker certificate or a related certification is required.
  • Life Coach Certificate is an asset.
  • Non-Violet Crisis intervention certificate is an asset.
  • Ability to build strong positive relationships with families and co-workers.
  • Ability to model strong communication, and relationship skills.
  • Strong cultural values and grounding and the ability to nurture this in others.
  • Ability to coach families in accomplishing household tasks.
  • Able to demonstrate flexibility and creativity when called upon.
  • Understanding the family structure and systems to solve complex family and relationship issues.
  • Ability to facilitate activities allows family members to build self-worth, resilience, and boundaries.

  • Demonstrates respect, understanding, and appreciation for Stó:lō culture, values, and traditions, or willingness to learn.
  • Builds relationships with candidates and staff through a lens of cultural humility.
  • Promotes equitable and inclusive hiring practices that reflect Seabird Island Band's values and diversity goals.
  • Engage with community members and potential applicants in a respectful and supportive manner.

Preferred:

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island's culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage with and support families in our community and the communities we serve.
  • Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of clients and community needs. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.
