About The Role

Gusto is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Principal Data Scientist specializing in product analytics. With over 10 years of applied experience in a business environment, the successful candidate will be instrumental in leveraging advanced statistical inference, experimentation, and causal analysis to influence strategic decisions across the organization. This role demands a trusted data storyteller with excellent coding skills in SQL and Python, a passion for data-driven insights, and a deep understanding of product, payroll, benefits, and HR data. As a key leader, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including Product, Engineering, Design, and Finance—to define and track critical metrics, deliver actionable insights, and support AI-driven initiatives that accelerate analysis and broaden impact across Gusto. Your expertise will help shape the analytical strategy for major product areas, drive scalable frameworks for experimentation, and serve as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, ensuring data-driven decision-making remains at the forefront of our growth efforts.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in Data Science within a product-focused software company
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and Python
  • Proven expertise in applying statistical methods, causal inference, and experimental design to business problems
  • Experience developing machine learning models (preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and leadership
  • Experience leading large, complex projects with measurable business impact
  • Proactive problem-solving skills with the ability to independently structure ambiguous problems into actionable insights
  • Passion for mentoring and elevating team capabilities in data science
  • BS/MS/PhD in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Applied Math, or related field, or equivalent industry experience

Responsibilities

  • Shape and lead the analytical strategy for key product or business areas, identifying high-impact opportunities and aligning stakeholders around data-driven priorities
  • Drive the execution of organizational analytical roadmaps to influence company strategy and ensure metric integrity across product domains
  • Develop scalable frameworks for experimentation, causal analysis, and metric design that impact multiple teams and organizational decision-making
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior product, engineering, and business leaders, proactively defining success metrics and advocating for data-informed strategies
  • Push the boundaries of statistical modeling, experimentation, and AI-assisted analytics to expand Gusto's data capabilities and impact
  • Mentor and coach junior data scientists, fostering a culture of analytical excellence and storytelling
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate insights into product development, customer engagement, and operational improvements
