Community Kitchens Program Facilitator

Position Summary
Community Kitchens is a critical program at Fort Saskatchewan Families First Society. The program is funded by the Government of Alberta Community Adult Learning Program, and we are proud to be able to deliver these much-needed services in Fort Saskatchewan. Adult learners are encouraged to take part in Community Kitchens so they can learn literacy/numeracy skills through budgeting, meal planning, measurement conversion and fundamental cooking skills. The Community Kitchens Facilitator guides participants through the entire process through a trauma-informed lens.
Duties and Responsibilities
- In partnership with Community Kitchens participants, look through recipes, meal plan, create budgets, and search out ways to save money
- Facilitator and participants will cook up to 3 meals that participants can take home with them
- Grocery shopping for the program
- Numeracy/Literacy needs to be an intentional component of the program (for example, how to find a recipe, how to read a recipe, how to find the best deals, how to calculate cost, what a well-balanced meal looks like, measurement conversions, etc.)
- Will phone registered participants prior to each kitchen group to confirm numbers
- Communicate with team members to ensure smooth running of the group
Qualifications
- Alberta Food Safety Basics Course
- Valid First Aid certification
- Thrifty budgeting and shopping skills
- Passion for community, cooking, and healthy food
- Patience and ability to support participants learning new skills
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Solid knowledge of trauma informed theory
- Empathetic and passionate about supporting families and community
- Flexible, adaptable, and excited to learn
- Ability to provide criminal record check and intervention record check
- Willingness to embrace the culture and values of the Families First Society
- Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Ability to perform the physical demands of grocery shopping (up to 20 pounds)
