Senior Rail Operator (Locomotive / Conductor / Rail Lead)

Location: Taylor, BC

Position Type: Full-time (48 hours each week), shift-based (4 on/3 off) (safety-sensitive), with planned hire dates in January and February 2026

Position Summary

Join our team and play a central role in safely and efficiently managing yard rail movements and unloading operations for high-volume commodity unit trains. As the Senior Rail Operator, you will be the day-of-operations authority for all non-main-track switching, railcar movements, and transloading/cargo-receiving activities. You'll use RCM/belt-pack systems to execute safe switching operations, coordinate with the Control Room, and ensure compliance with Transport Canada regulations, CROR, CN standards, and all applicable site procedures. Your leadership will directly support efficient unloading operations and overall site performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all non-main track switching and rail car movements using Rail Car Mover (RCM) and Locomotive with belt-pack technology.
  • Direct railcar spotting, securement, and frac sand unloading sequences to meet the daily operating plan.
  • Perform and verify air brake tests, hand brake application, and track-limit protections.
  • Enforce compliance with CROR, Transport Canada rules, CN and site-specific procedures.
  • Coordinate with the Control Room to manage train line-up, dome/bin levels, and unloading pace.
  • Oversee track and switch inspections, seasonal snow clearing, vegetation control, and light maintenance coordination.
  • Complete job briefings, hazard assessments, tailboards; lead incident and near-miss reporting with the Rail and Operations team.
  • Mentor Operators and Trainees; validating qualifications and safe work behaviors.
  • Support frac sand unloading by aligning gates, verifying flow rates, and monitoring equipment status.
  • Assist with railcar inspections, deficiency reporting, seal removal, product sampling and contamination prevention protocols.
  • Perform other duties as required, including equipment operation, and support for broader site operational and maintenance objectives.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years in railway operations with Locomotive / Rail car mover or Conductor experience in an industrial / switch yard setting preferred.
  • Proficient in CROR, non-main track procedures, and Transport Canada regulations.
  • Demonstrated RCM/rail car mover and/or belt-pack experience.
  • Strong understanding of safe switching, securement, and yard protection.
  • Energy Sector, bulk material handling or transload experience (oil & gas / frac sand) considered an asset.
  • Heavy equipment operation, forklift, AWP, skid steer or telehandler operation considered an asset.
  • eRailSafe qualified (or ability to obtain), Class 5 license.
  • Capable of walking the rail line, climbing stairs, and comfortable working outdoors.
