CONTROLLER (CONFIDENTIAL SEARCH)
Location: HRM (onsite)
• Full-time, permanent
Our client is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead full-cycle accounting and be the owner of monthly close, year-end, budgeting/forecasting, cash flow, and audit/tax compliance. You'll partner closely with operations to turn numbers into decisions, strengthen processes, and support a smooth finance transition as the organization centralizes reporting locally. This is a doer/leader Controller role, not a CFO track, ideal for someone who loves owning details, building practical controls, and explaining the "why" behind results.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reporting & Close: Own the monthly close; prepare GAAP-based statements and clear management packs; deliver year-end working papers and coordinate reviews/audits.
- Compliance & Tax: Ensure accurate/timely HST and payroll remittances; liaise confidently with auditors and the CRA; maintain audit-ready documentation.
- Cash, Budget & Forecast: Build rolling cash forecasts; manage banking/inter-company; lead annual budget and in-year reforecast; track performance vs plan.
- Costing & Operations: Maintain standard costs; analyze production, freight, and margin; recommend improvements that balance cost, quality, and service.
- Team & Process: Support AP/AR processes, set simple procedures and controls, and introduce cross-training to improve accuracy and cycle times.
- Funding & Grants (as needed): Identify relevant programs and support applications/reporting with leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Designation: CPA (CA/CMA/CGA) required; strong audit/tax depth and proven CRA liaison experience.
- Experience: 5–7+ years progressive accounting with time as a Controller; multi-entity or product/costing environments preferred.
- Industry: Background in production, logistics, or manufacturing
- Toolset: Advanced Excel; comfort with ERPs/accounting systems (e.g., Sage, QuickBooks, Dynamics GP or similar).
- Strengths: Year-end prep, audits, tax compliance, budgeting/forecasting, cash management, internal controls; clear, plain-language communication.
CORE COMPETENCIES
- End-to-End financial thinking: Connect forecast, procurement, production, inventory, shipment, revenue to anticipate P&L and cash impacts.
- Decision quality under deadline: Make timely cut-off/accrual/reserve calls; escalate early with rationale.
- Continuous improvement: Shrink close time, errors, and manual work with small, repeatable fixes and meaningful KPIs.
- Planning & follow-through: Use calendars, checklists, and clear handoffs to land month/quarter/year-end on time.
- Collaboration & ownership: Partner calmly with leaders; take accountability and close the loop in plain language.
COMPENSATION & DETAILS
- Competitive salary and benefits commensurate with fit and experience.
- Excellent working environment with peers and senior leadership
This is an established, medium-sized business, and the role is ideal for someone who wants to bring their skills, experience, and expertise to steadily support the operation every day. If you value teamwork, reliability, and meaningful contribution, and you are seeking role mastery and stability rather than a fast promotion track, we'd love to hear from you.
