Moms Against Racism (MAR) Canada is inviting applications/nominations for our
2026 Board of Directors

.

We're entering a new phase of growth - one grounded in community, sustainability, and bold leadership. If you're ready to help shape the future of an organization changing how families, schools, and communities approach anti-racism, we invite you to bring your experience and your heart to the table.

Who We Are

Founded in 2020, MAR is a federally registered non-profit that empowers caregivers, educators, and community leaders to raise anti-racist children and build equitable communities. Our work is grounded in our core values of Community, Learning & Unlearning, Humility, Healing, and Courageous Action.

Our Theory of Change is rooted in the belief that the adults closest to children - caregivers, educators, and community leaders - hold the power to shift generational outcomes by interrupting systemic racism at the level of relationships. We believe that when these adults are equipped with anti-racism knowledge, healing tools, and culturally relevant resources, they can disrupt internalized oppression, show up more consciously in relationships, and create emotionally intelligent, inclusive environments.

This foundation helps Black, Indigenous and racialized children and youth develop stronger identity, safety, and self-worth while transforming how white children and youth understand and engage with the world around them.

When caregivers, educators and community leaders shift their mindset, behaviors, and relationships to be rooted in anti-racism, they lay the foundation for lasting systemic change.

In 2025, 96% of participants reported increased anti-racism knowledge, 95% said their confidence to speak out grew, and 90% gained new tools to take action at home, school, and in their communities.

Help Us Build the Future

MAR has grown from a grassroots movement into a national organization with members and allies across Canada. As we continue strengthening our foundation including policies, partnerships, and sustainable funding, we are seeking committed leaders to help us navigate this next chapter of growth with integrity and care.

We are currently inviting nominations for:

  • Treasurer (1 position)
  • Director at Large (3 positions)

Terms begin
December 1, 2025

, following election at our
Annual General Meeting on November 22

.

The Gift of Shared Leadership

Serving on MAR's Board of Directors is more than a governance role, it can also be a transformational experience that connects purpose with practice.

As a Board member, you'll have opportunities to:

  • Deepen your anti-racism learning and leadership

through Board training and guided reflection.
- Be part of a caring, values-driven community

that practices accountability, compassion, and courageous dialogue.
- Attend our volunteer retreat

, a space for relationship-building, learning, and collective visioning.
- Contribute your expertise

to improve the lives of BIPOC children and families across Canada.
- Develop governance experience

with a growing national organization recognized for trauma-informed, community-led work.

Who We Hope to Grow With

We're seeking leaders who blend heart with strategy, vision with accountability. For MAR's next chapter, we need passionate people who follow through on commitments, serve on sub-committees, and remain actively involved.

Ideal candidates will bring experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Non-profit or charitable governance

and leadership
- Financial management

or oversight (especially for the Treasurer role)
- Strategic planning, policy development, or systems design
- Fund development, partnerships, or communications
- Human resources, evaluation, or operational strategy

We strongly encourage nominations from
Black, Indigenous, and racialized individuals

, as well as folks with lived experience of marginalization under other systems of oppression.

All candidates must be
values-aligned

with MAR's mission and vision, though prior MAR membership is no longer a requirement.

What's New This Year

We've refined our process and structure to reflect MAR's growth and the next stage of our evolution:

  • Conversational Interviews:

Every nominee will take part in a values-based conversation with the Nominations Committee. This ensures alignment not just in skills, but in heart, approach, and readiness for collective governance.
- Transition to a Governance Board:

As MAR continues to professionalize operations, the Board's focus is shifting from day-to-day involvement to high-level vision, policy, and strategy, ensuring sustainable growth while upholding our mission and values.
- Establishing a Lived Expertise Advisory Circle:

MAR is also developing a new advisory body composed of community members with lived experience in the issues we address. The Board will play a key role in supporting and collaborating with this Circle to ensure decisions remain community-informed and equitable.
