This position works in the Parks – Design organizational unit. Burnaby is experiencing an exciting time of growth and re-development that will shape the City and the quality of life for our residents. We are seeking strategic, forward-thinking leaders with a passion for planning to help the City's parks, recreation, and culture infrastructure to flourish for generations in serving our community. This is planning work at the professional level. An employee of this class applies knowledge of the principles, trends and best practices of urban planning. These projects may involve the municipal research, analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to identify and deliver community improvements. You will be engaged in the planning phases of the City's development. You will review and synthesize a variety of plans, strategies, capital improvements as well as best practices and trends to provide advice on planning through community engagement. Incumbents are expected to exercise considerable initiative and are permitted considerable independent judgement in developing, completing, and administering programs and projects within parks, recreation, culture, and community facility planning. You have considerable knowledge of municipal finance and growth management strategies related to parks, recreation and culture infrastructure. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include a Master's Degree in Planning or related discipline with considerable professional experience in urban or regional planning; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of urban and regional planning. Considerable knowledge of economics, municipal finances and sociology as applied to urban planning. Knowledge of standard statistical techniques and research methodology. The incumbent will posses the ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates, express ideas effectively orally and in a written or graphic manner, establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, professionals and the public, and to transmit clearly the principles and requirements of sound planning and development. Membership or eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of British Columbia, the Canadian Institute of Planners or the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects is required.
