Role description: 

Arcadis is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior leader to join our growing team in Toronto, ON. As a Principal, Senior Practice Lead in our dynamic Mobility Advisory team, you will be responsible for providing leadership and expertise for a variety of Active Transportation and New Mobility projects. 

The role requires a recognized expert in transportation planning and engineering, specifically active transportation network development, active transportation & complete streets design, bike share and e-scooter programs, TDM, and sustainable transportation policy and programming. The ideal candidate will also have experience in designing Cycling network plans; Protected intersections; Active Transportation Master Plans; Sustainable Transportation Strategies; Complete Streets and Active Transportation Design; Revitalization and Improvements projects; Functional Design; and Corridor Studies. 

This role will involve leading consultation programs with stakeholders, agencies, and the public, multi-modal transportation planning and engineering, extensive technical expertise, project management, leadership, business development, and strategic problem-solving skills. You will lead the development and implementation of planning solutions, manage client relationships at the senior management level, and provide oversight and mentorship to a dynamic team of engineers and planners.

Role accountabilities: 

In this role, you will take the lead in developing and executing transportation master plans, including overseeing consultation programs with stakeholders, agencies, and the public. You will spearhead municipal active transportation and mobility plans and guide the preliminary design of active transportation projects, ensuring innovative and practical solutions. Your expertise in active transportation visioning will be vital in shaping long-term strategies and delivering impactful outcomes for communities.  

Additionally, this role includes managing and supervising mid-sized teams and resources, providing effective direction to project teams to ensure successful execution. Strong communication skills are essential, as the role requires engaging with team members at all levels, providing technical guidance, oversight, and mentorship to foster growth and collaboration. This role includes performing technical reviews of work products to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards, managing project budgets to ensure delivery on time and within budget, and building and maintaining strong business relationships with public and private sector clients, including managing relationships at senior management levels.  

Business development is another key aspect of this role, which includes identifying opportunities, preparing proposals, and presenting to prospective clients to support organizational growth. The role also involves recruiting, motivating, and mentoring team members to foster professional development and meet project objectives. Staying current with Canadian market conditions, including transportation policies, standards, and trends, is essential to ensuring projects remain relevant and aligned with industry needs. Through effective leadership and technical expertise, this role supports the delivery of impactful transportation solutions and sustainable active transportation and mobility programs while advancing Arcadis' presence in the region.  

Qualifications & Experience: 

Required: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field 
  • Registered Professional Planner (RPP) / Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or equivalent 
  • 15+ years of relevant planning/engineering experience, including leadership in developing and implementing sustainable transportation solutions 
  • Recognized expert in transportation planning/engineering with a well-established professional network 
  • Proven project success on medium-sized projects or portions of large projects, including effective direction of project teams for project execution 
  • Strategic problem-solving skills and advanced technical knowledge in transportation planning/engineering 
  • Strong professional consulting skills, including project management, client relationship management, and commercial acumen at senior management levels 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver professional presentations 
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines concurrently 

Preferred: 

  • Experience leading active transportation and multi-modal programs for municipal clients 
  • Experience winning and leading projects 
  • Familiarity with emerging trends in active transportation, cycling, multi-modal transportation and climate-resilient transportation systems 
  • Understanding of Ontario public and private sector client needs and policies

The salary range for this position is $112,000 - $162,000. The base salary represents Arcadis' hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
