Hamilton Ontario LR K Canada Allen Leigh Consulting Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

About Us

At Bienenstock, we are transforming the way children and communities connect with nature. Our mission is to design immersive, resilient, and inspiring places using natural processes and materials that empower people of all ages to play, learn, and thrive.

We're looking for a Landscape Architect to join our team who brings bold creativity, sound technical expertise, and a commitment to nature-based solutions for diverse projects across North America.

Position Overview

As a Landscape Architect, you will take the lead in shaping meaningful spaces from botanical gardens and national parks to schoolyards, streetscapes, and campus master planning. You'll oversee project delivery from concept to construction, manage multi-disciplinary cross-functional teams, and ensure the successful integration of natural design elements that reflect our ecological values.

Just as importantly, you'll serve as a mentor and coach providing guidance, feedback, and professional development support to junior designers. Your leadership will help grow the next generation of natural design talent and uphold our standard of excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Lead and manage landscape architecture projects from conceptual design through to implementation.
  • Translate community engagement and ecological principles into compelling site plans.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project schedules, ensuring all milestones and deliverables are met.
  • Monitor project budgets, optimize resource allocation, and control costs to achieve financial targets.
  • Collaborate with clients, engineers, architects, and internal teams to deliver integrated natural design solutions.

Technical Expertise & Mentorship

  • Lead planning and phasing for multi-site, campus, and community master planning initiatives.
  • Share technical expertise to guide project teams on on-site analysis, grading, planting design, and material selection.
  • Produce high-quality construction documents and detailed technical specifications.
  • Utilize design tools and hand-drawn graphics to create detailed plans, renderings, and presentations that communicate ideas and designs effectively.
  • Coach and mentor junior designers through all project phases, from concept sketching to technical documentation.

Quality Assurance & Quality Control

  • Assist in reviewing technical drawings, specifications, and other project documentation for accuracy, compliance, clarity, and completeness.
  • Support redline reviews of construction drawing sets and specifications to ensure clarity, coordination, and constructability.
  • Work with project teams to identify and address design or documentation challenges promptly.
  • Help ensure all documentation adheres to current building codes, accessibility standards, and client requirements.
  • Contribute to efforts on the implementation of continuous improvement practices to enhance design quality and project outcomes.
  • Follow QA/QC protocols and checklists to maintain consistent technical excellence.

Risk Management

  • Help identify potential risks in design and construction, including compliance, safety, and environmental impact.
  • Support the team in developing solutions to mitigate risks, ensuring successful project outcomes.
  • Participate in site visits to assist in ensuring construction progress and alignment with project specifications

Construction & Contract Administration

  • Assist with field reviews and help coordinate site instructions, change orders, and supplemental sketches.
  • Support project close-out processes, including deficiency review and preparing payment certifications.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients and contractors during construction to help ensure project goals are realized.

Qualifications

  • Degree in landscape architecture, urban design, or a related field and licensure or eligibility for licensure in North America.
  • 6–10 years' experience in landscape design, with a focus on parks, playgrounds, gardens, streetscapes, and campus master planning.
  • Strong technical skills in grading, planting, construction detailing, and contract documentation.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, and project management software; hand graphic fluency preferred.
  • A passion for mentoring and developing design talent within a collaborative studio environment.
  • Proven experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams, including civil, structural, and environmental consultants.
  • Exceptional project management, communication, and leadership abilities.
  • A design approach rooted in ecological sensitivity, natural materials, and community engagement.
