The Opportunity
We are seeking a dynamic leader to join as the senior member of the ship's management team for the vessel sailing out of Blubber Bay, Texada. Reporting to the Marine Superintendent, central, this position is responsible for the overall management of the employees and vessel.
The role
Manages and leads the Shipboard Management Team by:
Overseeing all watches and ensuring consistency for the safe and efficient navigation of the vessel between ports; consistency of strong Bridge teams Overseeing a comprehensive vessel and maintenance program, including cleaning, monitoring, and replacement of safety and fire equipment, bridge equipment, stores, publications, and certificatesEnsuring a high standard of customer service, resolving and providing guidance on the resolution of customer and employee problems, complaints and grievances Ensuring that all written policies and procedures are kept current and updated in VSM/eFleet Ensuring that route performance records for the vessel's operation are in accordance with regulatory, certification, and audit requirements Coordinating the effective performance of the vessel and its personnel in providing safe, efficient, economic and timely transport of passengers and vehiclesServices as Company Management Representative Establishing and Maintaining a Safe, Secure, and Professional Work Environment by:
Directing the Shipboard Management Teams in the implementation of performance and operational improvements Ensuring safe practice in vessel operation in accordance with the Company Safety Management System and that employee work practices meet WCB standards; regularly conducts emergency drills in passenger safety and control Working towards the Company goal of improving safety in all aspects of operations and taking proactive steps to reduce worksite accidents, injuries, and time lost from work Fulfilling role and responsibilities as the Vessel Security Officer Ensuring employee training programs in all phases of vessel operation and that crew members are familiar with policies and procedures Monitoring and ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations, legislation, company dress, and appearance standardsParticipating and/or leading investigations of incidents and internal inquiresTaking corrective action and reporting equipment failures, damage, service interruption, and incidentsEnsuring timely and effective communication amongst all watches and departments and with shore-based staffEnsuring procedures are always followed that safeguard against environmental pollutionServes as Scheduling Services and People Experience Manager by:
Attending job interviews of the Deck department, and participating in hiring and promotion decisions of deck employeesEnsuring correct procedures are in place for orientating and familiarizing deck department employeesOverseeing and ensuring the completion of annual performance appraisals for deck department employeesMonitoring, guiding, coaching and addressing issues related to performance, conduct, and attendanceAssisting in the development and progression of deck employeesAttends grievance meetings with the Union as the management representative, with authority to resolve individual grievances in consultation with Human ResourcesImplementing disciplinary and corrective action for deck employees, up to and including terminationManages the fiscal activity of the vessel by:
Being responsible for the overall Deck budget for shipEnsuring effective vessel financial administrationMonitoring the budget, controlling labour and non-labour expenditures, and explaining costs variancesTaking timely preventative and corrective measures to ensure sound overall fiscal management of the vesselPerforms other duties as requiredWhat you bring to the team
Education/Academic Requirements and Work Experience:
Master, Near Coastal or Master Mariner CompetencyProficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite of ProgramsTraining in business and leadership is considered an assetExperience as a Master of an intermediate or large vesselCompetency Requirements:
Strong leadership demonstrated through reliable performance and positive interaction with others in the companyAn agent of change who is driven to ensure outstanding resultsAbility to identify and analyse business improvement opportunities that increase shareholder valueCustomer Service driven individualStrong written and oral communicationExcellent interpersonal skills – necessary for leading and motivating a diverse workforceTravel will be required

Additional information
The target salary range: $144,700-$180,900 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate's knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
