Position Summary:

The Engagement Coordinator plays a key role in advancing Wet'suwet'en self-determination and community wellness through culturally grounded engagement and communications. This role is guided by the Wet'suwet'en Wellness Framework and our Anuk Nu'at'en (our laws). Through the direction of Wet'suwet'en leadership, this position supports the coordination, facilitation, and documentation of Nation-led engagement processes for Honouring Our Ways (HOW) and Jurisdiction related initiatives.

The Engagement Coordinator will work closely with clans, house groups, community members, partner governments, and external agencies to ensure meaningful participation, accurate reflection of input, and clear communication across all phases of Nation-building and jurisdictional work.

Roles and Responsibilities (Job Duties):

1. Engagement & Relationship Building

  • Coordinate and facilitate engagement sessions across clans, house groups, and communities, ensuring culturally safe and inclusive participation.
  • Maintain respectful relationships with Wet'suwet'en citizens, hereditary leadership, and elected councils.
  • Support planning and logistics for community sessions, feasts, ceremonies, and special gatherings connected to Child & Family Wellness and Honouring Our Ways (HOW) initiatives.
  • Create accessible and inclusive spaces for dialogue, feedback, and storytelling that reflect Wet'suwet'en protocols and values.

2. Communications & Information Sharing

  • Develop and implement culturally relevant engagement and communications strategies in collaboration with the Child and Family Wellness team.
  • Prepare summary reports, engagement trackers, newsletters, and outreach materials.
  • Ensure Wet'suwet'en voices are accurately reflected in written reports and communications.
  • Liaise with consultants, media, and partner organizations to maintain message alignment and cultural integrity.

3. Coordination & Implementation Support

  • Provide coordination for engagement logistics including scheduling, venue bookings, travel, catering, and honoraria.
  • Support professional development, workshops, and training for staff and community members.
  • Review engagement data and reports to identify trends, gaps, and areas for improvement.
  • Contribute to project monitoring, evaluation, and reporting aligned with funding requirements.

4. Cultural & Governance Alignment

  • Support the co-creation of processes and tools that strengthen governance capacity according to Anuk Nuat'en.
  • Work collaboratively with Honouring Our Ways (HOW), ANABIP, and other Wet'suwet'en programs to align engagement practices across departments.
  • Ensure engagement processes reflect Wet'suwet'en rights, responsibilities, and laws.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Child & Youth Care, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with Indigenous children, youth, and families.
  • Strong knowledge of Wet'suwet'en governance, language, and cultural systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with engagement, genealogy, or cultural reconnection initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, and facilitation).
  • Strong digital literacy (Microsoft Office, Excel, Teams, and database management).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License and reliable transportation.

Work Conditions

  • Office-based in Smithers, BC, with frequent travel to Wet'suwet'en communities and territories.
  • May require evening or weekend work to support feasts, gatherings, or culture camps.
  • Exposure to emotionally demanding situations related to child welfare and reconnection.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to OW's privacy and data standards.
